Market Activities at the Ports
Devonport ]
With the delivery of potatoes heav
ier earlier in the week, there was a
decided weakening in the market yes
terday, and Brownells were quoted at
£5/5/, with Bismarcks at £4/5/ per
ton. The local delivery is 11,000
sacks. A decline in Sydney prices is
now forecast.
There is no change in other lines.
Oats aro 3/ to 3/3; wheat, 3/6 to 3/7;
peas, groy to 6/9 and blue 6/ to 6/(3.
Ulverstone
Yesterday there were approxi
mately 5200 sacks potatoes on thc
wharf. Approximately 600 sacks were
condemned, but they were picked over,
and only 370 sacks'will be held. There
will be approximately 4800 sacks avail
able for shipment.
Yesterday's values wore £5/5/ for
Brownells and £4/10/ for Bismarcks.
Tho Ngakuta arrived yesterday, and
last cvonina commenced loading pro
duco tor Sydney and Newcastle.
Burnie
When deliveries closed yesterday
thcro wero approximately 25,707 sacks
potatoes on tho wharves. This quan
tity, authorities state, is tho largest
ever to have been received at Burnio
in ono week, the previous record be
ing 25,032 sacks in March, 1927.
Yesterday's forwardinga wero very
heavy, and carno as a surprise to mer
chants. As a result tho market was
much quieter, and prices of both
Brownells and Bismarcks declined 5/,
quotations ranging from £5 to £5/15/
for Brownolls and £4 to £4/10/ for
Bismarcks.
Tho quantity available on tho N.W.
Coast is approximately 43,300 sacks,
and it is expected that Sydney will re
ceive from 27,000 to 28,000 sacks. If
that is so, it is anticipated that Syd
ney prices noxt week will declino to £7 j
for Brownells and £6 for Bismarcks. .
Advices from Sydney yesterday stat
ed that tho market there was rather
weak, and the hot weather was affect- j
ing consumption. Tho carryover, it
was stated, would be between 3,000
and 4,000 sacks. With a shipment of
24,000 sacks it was expected that tho
muvUct would hold, but if tho consign
ment was 26,000 sacks prices would de
cline.
Thc Ormiston will commenco loading
to-night for Sydney, Ncwcastlo and
Brisbane, and tho Ngakuta will load
to-morrow for Sydney and Newcastle.

Deliveries at the wharf yesterday
were 1303 sacks potatoes, 612 sacks
swedes (apart from those picked up
by the Laranah), 703 sacks carrots, 38
sacks parsnips, 119 sacks peas, 90
sacks oats and 100 bales straw.
No prices for potatoes were avail
able yesterday.
