Everyone Can Help
War Effort by Buying
Savings Stamps
"The purchase of ivar s.avincß stamps
might not scorn a great contribution to
tile Commonwealth Ciovcrnmenr.s war
effort, but it is an effective eontrilm
tion and one that should be made by
everyone," said the Federal Treasurer
(Mr. Spender) recently.
Mi'. Spender emphasised that the idea
behind tho scheme of war savings cer
tificates and war savings stamps was to
have savings flowing by millions of
rivulets lo join the main stream of funds
for war. Since thc cost of prosecuting
tho war was rapidly growing, the num
ber and volume of those streams must
also increase. That was why new sav
ings groups were being formed every
where and why stamps were being made
available.
"There is also another object which
I regard as being of the utmost import
ance-giving everyone a chance to help
thc. nation in this critical lime," said
Mr. Spender. "Not all of us cnn take
a direct part in the war. activity, much
less .1 front; line part, but we all want
to do something if we can, and investing
in war funds is something particularly
useful and worth while'. ' The splendid
success of war savings certificates has
shown how welcome has been the op
portunity they provide."'
War savings stamps are now on sala
at every post nfiico throughout the Com
monwealth. Upon purchasing a Stamp
for sixpence, a card with thirty-two
spaces may be obtained. When the.
thirty-i'wi) spaces have been filled with
stamps, thc card should bc taken to a
bank or post office and exchanged for a
certificate bearing a face valuo. of . £1.
