writes:
Tim Rrcnt quantity of smoko from
bush-fires is producing some peculiar
effects in tko atmosphere. On Sunday
evening all tho western and south-
western sky was illuminated with gor-
geous bands of color, nt first golden,
then pink, finally a, dark rod before
fading. They wero reminiscent of tho
color-effects wo had from volcanic dust
afterglows a couple of years ago.
On Monday evening the sun was of
a dark-red tint when nearing tho hori-
zon, with a belt of coppery-color ex-
tending each side. At 5.30 tho sun
rose like a great crimson football, nud
fifteen minutes afterwards was shining
between nn upper and lower mass of
smoke-cloud, just filling tho gnp bo
tweeu tho two and shining with a
peculiar lurid light which had an ex-
