LIVED IN FEAR.
NEW YORK, Sunday.
Larry Fay, one of the city's
most notorious criminals and
racketeers, was shot and killed
to-night, following an argu-
ment with one of his employes
in a mid-town cabaret over a
reduction of wages.
Fay reputedly made a for-
tune illegally organising milk
distributors, taxi chaffeurs and
others into "rackets." He ,
had a record of 44 arrests and
37 convictions, although most-
ly for minor offences.
According to other employes, Fay
recently decided to help relievo unem-
ployment by incorporating' a "shnre
of-tho-work'' movement nt his cabaret.
. Ho reduced tho doorman's working
hours and cut tho wages 40 per cent.
To this tho doorman objected, and
started an argument which resulted in
tho shooting.
For Fay lived in constant fear of
assassination at thc hands of his un-
derworld enemies. Usually ho wove
a bullet-proof vost, and rode in an
armored automobile.
