Opening of New Season
LAST SUNDAY'S EVENTS
Conditions were somewhat unpleas
ant for the opening of the new seasoi.
of th:; Geraldton Cycle Club on Sunday
morning last, rider.s having to finish j
into- an easterly breeze which pm |
spwta«-ular sprinting nut of tlt-- ques
tion and left -oini»etitor.s .somewhat
weary. However, with racing gear
iii;\v more plentiful, practically ail
riders were perfectly equipped for the
sport, such being a far cry from tin?
position experienced last yoar when all
.sorts and conditions of machines were
in commission.
The chief event of the morning's pro
gramme was a senior three-mile handi
cap, and in the first heat the scratch
ing pen was freely used. The winner
was It. Mi-Cagh with -J. Allendar and I.
M-Killop in the places, the lastmen
tioned conceding the rest of the field
a big start and doing well in such cir
cumstances to finish in third place. All
entrants in the second heat faced the
starter, and the general expectation
was that this would be keenly con
tested. Having his first ride, It.
McKillop was always in the leading
division, an-i in company with K. Back
siiall, F. White and \V. O'Hrien he gave
the c:ther riders a hard chase.
Although It. Manners, Backshall and
O'Brien compounded a mile from home,
McKillop found renewed effort and
maintained the leading position to
defeat White with McAuliffe finishing
particularly well to snatch third place
from I). Sharpe almost ou the line.
The finalists gave riie impression of
providing a good race, but McAuliffe
dropped out --f the picture early ami
I. McKiHop found his handicap too
much. For some time R. McKillop
matched the efforts of Allender,
McCagh and White, but when the pace
went on this new rider dropped to the
rear. Nearing the finishing post
McCagh and Allender again engaged
in a fighting finish, and as in the open
ing heut, McCagh prevailed to win by a
length with \Vhit;» in third place, then
coming It. McKillop, M. McAuliffe and
I. McKillop in that order.
In fhe junior event over the same dis
tance G. Doolan led down the finishing
stretch with It. Nash and M. -Jrigsby
just in the rear on even terms and finish
ing fast. Within thirty yards from
tin? judge it appeared as though Dooian
might be overhauled, but he crossed the
Hue as the winner with Nash and
(.Irigsby tiring.
