JOHN JACOB ASTOB.
\f — ?-
For a taxpayer, Colonel John Jacob
Astor, the American millionaire, has an
extraordinary conscience. He thinks
that he is not paying enough, and he has
set all his stewards at work to find out
at once precisely how much he possesses,
in order that he may be taxed .on the
true valuation. The real estate owned
singly and jointly by Colonel Astor and
Mr. William Waldorf Astor, wh§ lives
in London, is estimated at £20,000,000,
of which the colonel's holdings are said
to be £8,000,000. The gross rental
from the entire estate is abcut
£1,200,000 a year, and the net income
is put at something over 800,000. Colo
nel Astor's personal property is offici
ally assessed at only £50,000, and he
now pays £60,000 taxes on realty valu
ed at £5,000,000. The assessment is
made on a basis of 60 per cent, of the
actual value, but the man who fought
for his country at Santiago and him
self equipped a battery for service in
the Philippines wishes to support his
fatherland by a much larger percentage
than this.
