FOOLISH OR FIENDISH.
HOSPITAL ATTACKED.
There was a heavy outburst ot limg
at Belfast this morning. Bullets
smasher! the windows of the Maternity
Hospital. Thc patients were compelled
td lie on the floor. Many became hys
terical. Fortunately, none were in
jured.
The members of the medical staff of
thc hospital protest against the
atrocious attack un the Maternity Hos
pital. 'They say that thc inmates were
terrorised. For minutes bullets
swept the wards. The patients flatten
cd themselves against the walls. Help
less invalids Hung themselves from
their beds, while thc nuns and nurses,
yainly attempted to allay their terror, j
Other wards contained men andi
boys, many of whom had bec« wounded'
in recent rioting? One boy, whoso feet
were tied to a weight, hung otit of his
bed ami was unable to free himself.
Another, aged ll, suffering with an
amputated leg, lay helpless with terror.
All the lights were extinguished, the
hospital authorities hoping that thc
shooting would cease.
The hospital adjoins the gaol. Tho
attack may thus have been due to an
error. If so, it was fiendish folly.
