PROSPECTING THE AUS
TRALIAN ALPS.

cussed by Mr. Sydney Smith,
Minister of Mines for New South
Wales, and Mr/Foster, the Victorian
Minister of 'Minos, recently. Mr.
Smith was returning from the con
ference of Ministers of Agriculture,
recently held in Adelaide, and
took the opportunity afforded by
his presence in Melbourne to
meet Mr. Foster, and exchange
views on the matter. This -has
respect to a joint contribution by
their respective Governments to
wards the expense of prospecting
for gold on either side of the
border line from Cape Howe to the
A-ustraban Alps. Along this line,
which runs from Cape Howe to the
Upper Murray, a considerable
amount of prospecting has been
done, with most encouraging
results, by men from both colonies.
Good gold has been got, especially
at Delegate and Bendoc, where the
men from New South Wales have
been the most successful- The chance
of important results from more
systematic prospecting is excellent,,
and realising this, Mr. Smith
promised to urge the New South
Wales Government to co-operate
in the matter of cost. It is under
stood that Mi-. Foster will as
earnestly press the matter on the
Victorian Government, and that
the result will be joint action in
this most important workv
