OBITUARY.
Mr JOHN TAYLOR COOKE.
By the death of Mr. JOHN TAYLOR
COOKE, of Newleyine, another name
has been erased from the roll of old
colonists. Mr. Cooke, who arrived here
in the year 1829, within a few months of
the proclamation of the colony, must be
ranked among the very earliest of our
settlers ; and, with the exception of
a short sojourn in England some four-
teen years ago, he has permanently
resided in our midst, ever since.
On his arrival in Perth—now nearly
half a century ago—Mr. COOKE
turned his attention to the building
trade, and a few years after he located
himself at Newleyine, near Northam,
and entered upon agricultural and
grazing pursuits, investing also a con-
siderable amount of capital in mining
property which bordered his estate at
Arrino, on the Irwin River. Mr.
COOKE, who was of a very unobtrusive
disposition,—although he possessed the
ability,—seldom took a prominent
position in public matters ; but we
have no reason to doubt that the
example set by his life, which was
characterised by uniform straightfor-
wardness, integrity, and uprightness, in
every sense of the word, shed in full
measure its wholesome influence on
those around him. Whatever were
his short-comings, he had many good
parts, and it only remains to be added
that he has gone to his rest honored
and esteemed by all classes.
