SEMAPHORE PROGRESS.
TRADERS' ASSOCIATION FORMED.
On Wednesday evening a meeting of
business people of the Ssinaphore district
was held in the town ball at the instance
of the Mayor of Port Adelaide (Mr. A. O.
R. Tapp). There were 40 traders present.
Mr. Tapp said the city council was
doing all it could to foster the interests
of the Semaphore and make its beach
popular. It had spent more than £ll;000
on the beach in the last nine years, exclud
ing £9.000 spent on the pavilion. On occa
sions Glenelg picnics had resulted in over
£500 being spent in that district for the
day. Semaphore was popular at all times,
and the traders, by organization and judi
cious advertising, could make the charms
ai the beach even more widely known.
Tiny should appeal to country folk, and
they could tints attract many more to tlicir
beach. He ? had got in touch
with several country centres
proposing to send picnics to tbe
Semaphore, and had issued to them a cor
dial welcome. He suggested that a traders'
association might be formed.
Mr. H. Moore said the people trading
on the beach were there for only a short
while, whereas the shopkeepers were estsib
lished traders. At present most of the
money went to the traders temporarily
stationed «u the beach.
Mr. H. Dunchne moved — 'That a
traders' association be formed, comprising
traders from the Esplanade and East
Ward.' This would, exclude beach sites.
The beach was a pleasure resort, and not
a business place. Stallholders were there
during holiday times, and reaped a good
harvest.
The motion was carried.
Mr. Dunchue suggested that yearly
tenants on beach sites be admitted to
membership. It was pointed out that
more than £100 had been offered for sites
when auctioned by the city council. Seve
ral business men were nominated for Pre
sident, but declined. Mr. A. Possinzham
was finally elected. Messrs. E. J. Wood
roofc. E. Dinistan, S. Caporn, G. Mart,
and R. A. Bleechmore were appointed
Vice-Presidents, and Mr. G. Mart Secre
tary pro tcm. \
A. note was received from Mr. J. S.
Yerran, on behalf of the Semaphore car
nival committee, asking if the executive j
would be admitted to the meeting. It
was unanimously dc :ided that the associa
tion would be for traders only.
Mr. H. Dunchue was e'ected treasurer.
It was resolved that the executive commit
tee be empowered to draw up rules, and)
that the association be entitled, 'Tliff
Semaphore District Traders' Association.'
The next meeting was fixed for February
24.
Mr. Tapp wished 'th? association every
success, and hoped that it would be of
benefit to the traders and to the City of
Portv Adelaide. At the instance of Mr.
H. Dunchue. a vote' of thanks was ac
corded the Mayor (Mr. Tapp).
