THE RACE.
Very little could be seen of the start
because of the huge crowd of spectators
gathered at the fipot. However, Martino
and Moderation looked to be the first pair
to actually move, while Trillion got off well.
When tne field had settled down Martinj
.-iiid Moderation were in the van, Trillion,
Kingbier, and Petracia were well placed,
?while Lady Eudora had been cut out. and
. Alacrity waa a conspicuous figure at the
tail of the bunch, with Maorilander. Om
the hill Nobody's Daughter joined the
1 pacemakers, and Mareca, Trillion, and1
Kingbicr were on their 'heels, while Pisto
larie and Petracia were bunched in tho
ruck. Martjno was the first to turn for
home, but Trillion was in his wake. Simul
taneously Martino, Moderation, and No
body's Daughter cracked up, and left
Trillion on the rails in the lead, with
Mareca and Kingbier the most prominent
of the others. At tne distance Amantea
(out wide) flashed up, and she Boon left
the main body, and went in pursuit of the
favourite. For a stride .or two St. Spasa'a
sister looked a possibility, but Lewis kept
his mount moving, and he wou handsomely,
if not comfortably, by barelv a length— the
judge made it _ two— while Kingbier,
Mareca, and Alacrity crossed the line in a
heap, and Mr. Bickford selected the
chestnut mare for third place. At
no stage of the contest did the
favourite give his supporters any
cause for alarm, and the victory was a
clear-cut one. He established n new record
by winning the Goodwood an-d City Handi
p.ips in the one year, and also reduced the
time for the' race by a quarter
of a second. Trillion was bred
ly Mr. Ernest t'farke, and was presented
by him to ivlr. J. K. I'.iexer, in recogni
tion of Hie fact that Mr. 1'rewer selected
The Welkin in Jindamrfor Mr. Clarke.
He is a full brother to Sister Satellite,
being bv The Welkin from the Marco
mare Wil«a, who is a half-sisteri
to the Fulham Park eire Passing By.
This was J. Sccfcie's first City Handicap
victory, and he was heartily congratulated
upon the result, while it was R. Lewises
third success in tbe race. Away back in
1898 he scored for Mr. Brewer on Lochaber,
and won again on fleet Admiral in 1900.
Scobie and Lewis are a pair of visitors
rightly popular in this State. Tbe majority
of the startera had their prospects ruined
in the opening furlong. Pistolarie, Lndy
Kudora. Alacrity, and Amantes fared badly
in the jumn-out and in the subsequent
jostling and crowding, and Alacrity
was knocked back to next to laBt. She,
therefore, did remarkably well to end up
third. Amantes was also unlucky. Not
only did she get into trouble during the
opening etages of the contest, but she was
badly galloped on, and was slightly lame
when she returned to the paddock.
Mareca was always well placed, but failed
over the last little bit, while Kingbier ran
a good race throughout, without even
quite looking a winner. Pistolarie only got
clear in the straight, and he was putting
in good work at the end, but his effort was
too late
—The Remaining Events.—
Fatal Error made a one-act affair of the
Steeplechase. Jumping wildly, he soon
cleared out from the opposition, and al
though Jack Crusoe and Fine Degree closed
on lim at the final obstacle, they could
not reach him in the dash up tho straight.
The favourite, Bundong, was fourth. A
fhort price was accepted about Elkin in
I he Adelaide Stakes, but lie did very little
better than, he dkl at Morphettville. The
ivace was set by Powder and Patches, but
Lord Setay — who whs responsible for
a record two-furlong 6print in the
morning — had her measure at the
distance. A't . that point Crusader
tackled the to^weight, and the heavy
burden, anchoring the St. Anton colt
at the end, Crusader scored rirely. The
winaier is by Passing By, and was bred by
hia owner, and he has more than pa'd bis
woy. Powder and Patches ended up third,
but the number of Pistol Princess wsb
first hoisted for that position. The
sport closed down with the Park
Mde Stake*, and this event attracted a
better field than usual, 12 facing tbe bar
rier, and all of them hold the right to run
in the Cup on Saturday. Dependence,
who had been working well at Morphett
ville, settled dcr.vn as favourite, while 'there
was good support for King of the Sea; ir
fact, quite n number of the candidates had
admirers. The betting on tho contest
was:—

Mclbolt was the first to find his legs,
bu-t he never got very far away from
King of the Sea and Dependence, while
Seabound, who began smartly, soon dropped
back, and Gold CulTa was earlv a conspicu
ous figure in the rear. Turning into the
straight Dependence ran up to the leader
and fnon secured his measure, while a
little further on King of the Sea also threw
out his challenge. No sooner had the Vic
torian three-year-old got the better .of
matters and appeared to be an easy win
Jier. thari New Tipperary (out wide) put
in his claim. He caught the three-year-old
,1 few strides from the post, and continuing
his run s cored nicely in record time for
tbe race and Sute. The victory was
somewhat unexpected, for although New
Tipperary was a weight-for-age winner in
Western Australia, and has an Australian
Cup to hia credit, he shaped rather badly
in the Elder Stakes run under similar con
ditions at Morphettvillo last month. Evi
dently, however, he is back to form, and
will have to lie reckoned with in the Birth
day Cup. This is how he will meet hie
old rivals:—
