EXPORTING BUTTER.
(To the Editor of the Bathurst Daily Free Press.)
Sir,— For the past two or three weeks
the idea of exporting butter to the Eng
glish or any other market from our district
has forced itself upon my consideration ;
and I see nothing to prevent a company
being formed of farmers and storekeepers
for that purpose.
It would be a great benefit to relieve
our local market of even five to 10 tons a
month. At the present time prime factory
butter is realising wholesale in London
1s to 1s 1½d per lb., and prime dairy
butter 11½d per lb.
The expenses from here, including all
charges, would not be more than about
2½ per lb. And the butter from these
colder districts should carry home and
land in better condition than the coast
butter.
A large capital would not be required
for such an undertaking, as many of the
large dairy farms as well as factories
might contribute a certain quantity per
month ; and an advance might be raised
through an agent for about half its value, if
necessary.
Yours truly,
W. T. BONNOR.
