Perth Market Review:
Tomatoes At High Price
The week's markets found most vegetables at a lower
price, exceptions being peas and onions. Tomatoes were
in keen demand at high prices.
There were heavier supplies of
cabbage offering at the metropo-
litan markets during the week.
Peas were firm on late quotes.
Bunch lines were hard to quit at
low rates. Prices:-Potatoes, to
12/6; swedes, metropolitan to 15/9;
carrots, prime 1/6, few 2/6; tur-
nips, prime 1/11; beetroot, prime
1/11 parsnips, prime 4/ onions,
white, none offering, brown to 24/;
pumpkin, ironbark 7/ to 9/6 cwt.;
cabbage, to 24/; lettuce, crates to
7/9; cauliflowers,, to 20/6, inferior
from 6/; celery, to 7/6, prime to
5/; peas, local to 1/0½; beans, lo-
cal French to 6¾d.; runner beans,
6½d. to 8½d.; rhubarb, 3¾d; brus-
sels sprouts, to 1/2½ lb.
In the fruit section there were
only a few citrus lines, which wer
firm on late quotes. Other lines
were not in demand at easier
values. Mandarins and bananas
were easier. Best tomatoes were
rationed at fixed rates. Prices:-
Apples and pears, board rates ;
oranges, navel, 108-144, to 9/6;
lemons, to 6/6; grapefruit, to 9/;
mandarins, to 20/3; cape goose-
berries, to 9½d.; bananas, ex Car-
narvon to 55/6; passionfruit, none
offering; grapes, none offering;
tomatoes, local ripe to 20/.
In the sheep section of the met-
ropolitan stock sales during the
week the quality of the previous
week's standard was not main-
tained. Opening sales were de-
cidedly easier but a firming trend
was noticeable as sales progressed.
Prices: Wethers up to 27/. ewes
up to 19/.
In the lambs section there was
not such a keen demand for
heavyweights, with the result that
the market was a shade easier.
Prices for best quality lambs were
up to 27/6.
The yarding in the pig section
was heavier than the previous
week. Bidding was again animated
throughout, and all classes of pigs
were firm. Prices: Choppers up to
90/, baconers up to 86/, porkers
up to 57/.
There were very light supplies
of all lines at the Fremantle meat
markets on Thursday. There was
no pork, mutton, or lamb offering.
Prices realised were as follow:
Price Fixing Commissioner, 7¾d.
lb., Beef. 5½d. lb., price fixed by
the Price Fixing Commissioner;
no plain offering. The market
cleared readily to spirited bidding
at these prices.
NELSON'S MEAT MARKETS
Nelson's meat market reports as
follows for Friday's sale: Car-
case meat: Very heavy supplies of
veal forward, other lines being ex-
tremely light. Values remained
firm, with mid-week quotes, ex-
cepting for veal, which was
slightly weaker. Pork, handy
weights to 9d., very poor lower,
heavy pork 6½d. to 9d.; veal, prime
to 7¾d., medium 4¾d. to 6¼d., plain
down to 2½d. beef, 5½d. (side);
lamb, prime to 9d., medium quality
to 8¼d. mutton, prime to 5d., others
lower.
