GOLD IN DUCKS' GIZZARDS.
That there is auriferous country about
Yarram, Victoria (says The Melbourne He-
rald) was again demonstrated in a peculiar
way last Saturday. A householder near
the town was preparing a pair of ducks for
dinner, and in the gizzards was found gold.
The birds had never travelled far, and en-
quiries were made. It was found that they
had access to a load of sand procured
from near the local rifle butts. The coun-
try round is known to be auriferous, but
nothing more than "colour" has ever been
found. There is a good deal of gold-
bearing country in Gippsland, but the up-
heavals and subsidences of prehistoric times
have destroyed the traces which should
lead the miner to it. This circumstance
accounts for rich pockets, like Turton's
famous find of more than 40 years ago.
