STOREKEEPERS UNITED. '}'
MOUNT BARKER, December 21.—
A Storekeepers' Association for the Mount
Barker district was formed at the meeting
of those interested last night. It includes
the storekeepers of Liitlehampton.-aiid will
meet to discuss matters of mutual interest
;md benefit. For the las: few weeks the
question of Saturday early closing has been
a subject of discussion, and it 1ms been ad
journed until February 12, when it is
hoped finality will be reached. So far it
is feared that the scheme will not receive
the support of the majority of the store
keepers. Mr. H. A. Monk has been elec
ted President of the new association, and
Mr. Bruce Barker secretary.
BOOLEROO CENTRE, December 20.
The adjourned meeting of the vigilance
commi'utet was held this evening Mjl. F.
MeMartin was in the chair. A report re* /
yarding the cost of the water scheme from
Melrose will be made in a fortnight.^; It
is stated that enough water can be obtained
there to . supply Idclrose, liooleroo, Wil
lowie, and Hammond. It was resolved thatf
the secretary ' write to the Postmaster
General, and ask that a new office be added
to the present building, and that the fence
be .. renewed. The secretary was also in
striictetd/ to communicate with the Educa
tion Department with a view of having a
new fence and gate erected along the front
of the school ground; and to write to the'
district council and ask for a pound to be
erected at Booleroo Centre.
GAWLER, December 21.— On Tuesday
evening, at Pine Lodge (the residence of
Mrs. \V. Barnet) the members ef the
Choral Society assembled and made a pre
sentation to Miss E. V. Barnet, the
pianist. The President (Mr. 11. K. Thorn
son), was eulogistic concerning the ability
and senice of the recipient, and asked heir
to accept' a. gold brooch and pendant - de
signed like the badge of the society. Tho
Secretary (Mr. H- A. Wuitehill) 'was pre
sented with a gold badge. The conductor
(Mr. Albert James) also paid a tribute to
the recipient. A musical programme was
presented by Misses Limb (2). Carne, and
E. V. l'arnet, and Messrs. Skurray. Reb
beck, Whitehall, and James, and the society,
gave two pan songs. At the closing prac
tice of the year of the Gawler Male Voice
Choir, the pianist. Miss C. Came, was
given a workbox as an acknowledgment of
her- services. The President (Mr. IK. K.
Thomson) made the presentation. ?
MOUNT BARKER, December 21.— The
customary at home was held in the Metho
dist Lecture Hall on Wednesday, to give
old folk of the district an opportunity to
spend a pleasant afternoon in the form of
a reunion. The arrangements were made
by the ministers of the town - with their
wives, and the gathering, which was tnc
ninth vi its kind, was successful. The
season's greetings were extended to all
?present. The Rev. T. U. R. and Mrs.
lialford rendered a vocal duct, and tea was
terved.
MAITLAND, December 20-Notification ?

new weekly paper, to be 'called The Mait
land Watch. This will supply a long-felc
want in the district, which thoroughly war
rant)! a newspaper. It will be printed in
the town by Mr.-C. C. Xeale.

connection with the town council an ex
traordinary election to fill the vacancy in
the North Ward was licld to-day, and reHii

sens, 63. Mr. Chester had the Liberal sup
port, and Mr. Cossens the Labour. U 33

MOUNT PLEASANT. December 21.-la
connection with the State school break-up,
a concert and Christmas tree, , from which
every child received a present, took placq
in the institute hall last night. Mr. T.
Madigan, as Father Christmas, -distributed
the presents. -A coffee supper; was provi
ded by Mrs.' Gent and the/parents of tha
children.

ORRORQQ. December *2i;— On AVednes
day evening friends of Mr.. It, .11, Nichol
son met at the Orroroo Hotel to eay goodby
to him prior to his departure for Mait
land, -where he will take up-the-position of
accountant in the National Bank. Lieut.
Col. Hancock occupied the 'chair, and re
ferred to_ the loss the town would experi
ence owing to Mr. Nicholson's removal.
Messrs. Addison, Sharp, Keats, Searsqn.
Shaw, and Judel) expressed their apprecia
tion of the merit? of the guest, and Dr.
Deravin, on behalf of his many friends,
presented to him a shaving mirvor, brushes,
and pocket book. Mr. Nicholson took a
keen interest in the totvn, and was a pro
minent Freemason, lay render in the An
glican church, cricketer, footballer, and
tennis player.
