Goldfields Carnival
-?-?
HANDICAPS FOR MAIN EVENTS
SERBURY THE ACCREDITED BEST CANDIDATE
By BILL2AC. j
Weights frere issued on Wednesday
tor the main handicaps at the goldfields
carnival, opening at Kalgoorlie on
August 20, abd concluding at Boulder
oh September S. About 60 horses had
to be weighted for the three big events
-Hannahs Handicap, Kalgoorlie and
Boulder Gups^-but only approximately
60 pei cent. .#ere really handicapped
for any of the races, the rest being
bunched On the minimum weight.
lt would probably be impossible to
handicap some of the better class away
from the inferior ones. Still, on the
day. it may be discovered that among
those tailing the handicaps are one or
two capable of playing a prominent
part "
Serbury got top weight in all three
races-9.12 in the Hannans Handicap,
of a mlle, and 9.9 in the two Cups, both
a mile and a quarter. In his last
start, at Helena Vale, on June 7, Ser-
bury had an easy win over a mile and
a quarter and 100 yards with 9.7, from
Bravado (8.1), Ergotic (6.11), Aber
gwain (7.7), Wallace Forteviot (7.2),
and Sir Waddy (6.9).
While Serbury has been on the shelf.
Bravado, Sir Waddy, Wallace Forte-
viot and Ergotic have each won a
middle distance handicap, so the form
reads well. At Iiis preceding run
Serbury won the W.A.T.C. Foundation
Handicap, of a. mile and a half, with
8J.2, from Arapunl (8.8), Exceeder
(8.7), Runabout (9.8). Wallace Forte-
viot (7.2), Roseburn (6.8), Ergotic (6.7),
and Sir Waddy (carrying 6.S).
In the goldfields Cups Serbury" has
lllb. more than his last W.A.T.C. win,
but the goldfields minimum is 71b.
higher. Thus the rise is actually one
of only 41b. Against this. Runabout
in the Cups jumps up 41b. in actual
weight and Wallace Forteviot 121b.
When figures are analysed Serbury fs
well treated on the "fields-if he could
be depended upon to continue to race
honestly.
It is-doubtful whether Runabout was
seen at his best when he was unplaced
in the W.A.T.C. race won by Serbury.
Runabout won the last Kalgoorlie Cup
with 9.3, when the minimum weight
was 6.7. He scored by four lengths
from Appian Way and Arimond. Later
on, in Perth, Runabout's performances
included the winning of weight-for-age
races. When he was at his top prior
to June he was giving Serbury weight.
Hint in the same stable as Runabout
is well treated tn all three races with
9.8 and 9.5,.seeing that she won the
Railway Stakes (same distance as the
Hannans Handicap), with S.6 (mini-
mum 6.7 as against 7.0) ; finished well
i forward in the Perth Cup with S.O. and
ran third in the Imperial Stakes with
9.7 to Battledore (8.6), and Ergotic
(7.6), half heads between them. Bat-
tledore, in the two goldfields Cups with
8.10, is now receiving 91b. from Hint.
Two interesting ones are Mr. P. A.
Connolly's pair. Resource and Bra-
vado, between which there is only a
pound or two in both races. Resource,
on his best Sydney form, would be a.
good Investment in either of the two
cups with 9.0, but he is bad legged.
Bravado with 9.4 in the Hannans, per-
haps is better off than he is, with &13
int the Cups. He is better over a mile
than over longer courses, even though
in two attempts at a mile and a quar-
ter locally he ran second and then won.
At Helena Vale on June 7, Serbury,
with 21b. more than his imposts in the
Kalgoorlie and Boulder Cups, gave 201b.
to Bravado and made him look Uke a
hack. Bravado in the next run won
just as easily from Kongoni and Wal-
lace Forteviot both winners subse-
quently. On the 'fields Serbury con-
cedes Bravado only 101b.
A nicely weighted one in the Han-
nans at least is Kalloni at 8.6. True.,
Kallon! has failed to realise expecta-
tions in this State, but a brier let up
he has had may make ali the difference,
and were he to strike his best Eastern
States form the opposition would have
a merry time of it chasing him in thc
run home.
The much discussed Totola, Knight
Commander, and Roseburn are a. trio
that may bear consideration, while of
the bottom weights. Good Hope would
be a great investment .ior which race
he were slipped for were he to strike
his best form. It was only in Decem-
ber last that Good Hope ran third in a
weight-for-age race of a mile and a
quarter behind Coolbarro and Run-
about the unplaced lot including Kal-
loni (which though at the time was no-
where near himself)... Battledore, Cac-
tus, Bravado, Cap, and Dawn of Youth.
Good Hope has slipped down the
scale since then, with the result that
in the Hannans he has only 21b. over
tlie minimum, and the minimum in the
Cups. His dash into second place in
a tepriht at Canning Park eight-days
agto is - encouraging, but he is not a
yoting höfse.
With a month till the first of the
races there is yet ample-time to go
further in tb the chances of the candi-
dates. Besides, there is no informa-
tion possible as yet respecting what
horses will make the trip to the 'fields,
but there is reported to be a keen de-
mand for boxes in Kalgoorlie, which
seems to indicate that the visiting con-
tingent will be numerically strong. The
weights for the three races are:
