GOTHIC'S NEWMARKET
TOUR FIRST FAVORITES FAIL BADLY
ELEVENTH HOUR COMMISSION ON THE ENGLISHMAN
-+-1_--/
Zn cool, doll weather to-day the
VÄ.O. commenced its autumn meet- ¡
lng. A..hot favorite in Bicolor ran a
poor race in the St. Leger Stakes, and
the hopes that Windbag's brother
would develop into a. champion -were
shattered. Epilogue won easily. Bur-
ing the week there has been a steady
stream of money .for, the imported
Gothic, and his friends rallied round
him so strongly to-day that he short-
ened to 10 to 1 and started on equal
terms with Fuji San. Gothic ran a
great race to-day. Biskra, the South
Australian, ran up to his reputation,
and Chrystal, by gaining third place,
did not disgrace herself. The mighty
Heroic was never dangerous, and Vali-
care also found her weight too much
to pace it with the lighter brigade at
the Jiniah. Hoya! ieast wqs> too good
for the two-year-olds, and Bunkie
made so many tríenos by the convinc-
ing manner in which he won the
.brunswick Stakes that be is now favo-
rite for the Australian Cup. Details:

The pace was slow in the «arly

increase the speed until they had gone
half a, mile. Epilogue, who led from
the -start, showed the way past the
seven furlongs to Bratza and Lanson.
with Cyden and Bicolor last. Epilogue
carried on the lead and appeared to
gain a further advantage near the mile
post. He led round the home turn and
intp the straight from Lanson, and bad
no difficulty in beating that horse by a
length and a half, with Cyanate 2i
lengths off third. Then, five lengths

Heroic, Fujisan and Adjong were
most prominent at the start. After go-
ing a couple of furlongs Gothic and
Bravado on the far side, Biskra and
Red Gauntlet in the centre and Vali-
care were just ahead or Heroic, and
these seemed to be the leading horses.
With two furlongs to go Biskra, Bar-
inghup, Fujisan, Crystal and Gothic
were in front, and when a better view
was obtained Biskra and Gothic on
the Inside and Chrystal on the outside
were seen to "be the leaders. Just be-
fore the distance post Gothic had a
lead of about a length and he won by
that much from J3iskra, who beat'
Chrystal by a similar margin. Bar-

Tri vale deprived' Sion of the lead en-
tering the straight where they were

Royal Feast. The last-named finished
very fast on the outside and came
