RIFLE CARNIVAL.
'THE KING'S' IN PROGRESS.
J. T. Lake Leading.
Shooting was resumed at 9 o'clock on
Thursday, the whole of the day being de
voted to the firBt and second stages ot
'?Tim Kins's.' which was fired over five
ranges.. three of them, however being at
600 yards. Major Darley was again in
charge of the operations, and the shooting
was carried' through with characteristic
dispatch. The secretarial duties were so
ably supervised by Mr. F. S. Bleechmore,
that he* even found time to take a rifle
oe to the continuous lange, and fire a
practice round. In the card tally branch
of the work, Messrs. W.' Lucas P. Stone
man, and Lieut. Grenfell and W. O. Mor
ris proved most adept, and they had the
score sheets finalized at 7 o'clock. . Mr
Bleechmore, early in' the day, received
the following cablegram from Gen. G. H
Dean, V.D., who is in London: — 'Greet-
ings to all, best wishes for a successful
meeting.'
The 300 yards range was the first to
engage ;the. attention of the' marksmen.
A rear fishtail . wind blew. South Aus
tralia was kept well to the fore; for A. I).
Potts (Langhorne's Creek) and A. E.
Broadribb- (Goodwood United) recorded
the possible— seven bullseyes. Those who
finished with one point less weret-John
Williams (Jamestown), A. Meschke (Port
Pirie) ,W. K. Oliver (Wasleys), and J.
Eevell (Adelaide. Rifle Club). John' Wil-
liams was in fine form, and he put on
the possible at 500 yards— the second
range— and took the lead along with Broad
ribb. C. P. Nobelius (Victoria) and S.
Amey (Torrens .Valley), J. H. Williams
Melbourne). A. J. Moore (Wallaroo), J.
L. Campbell (A.R:C.), J. S. McEwen
(Blyth), and J. C. Barker (Waslcyg) also
returned a 35 card. W. Green (A.R.C.)
had done rather well with two scores ot
S3, but lie failed at 600 yards, and finished
at 96. W. Thomson (Victoria), who had
also been prominent, could only manage
31 at the third range, and lie was counted
out at 98 by.C. P. Nobelius. John Wil
liams ?dropped only 3 points at 600 yards,
and this brought him to :101, and, inci
dentally, the first, prize of £6. Amey se
cured 34. and although he had been easily
ed at 300. yards, he beat all but John
Williams, being two points in arrears. On
the same mark— 99— was ?' that champion
rifleman, J. H. WilHams, the Victorian,
who had finished with 33, his first and
sixth business shots beings inners. R.
Dewar. of the Eeedbeds Club, was in con
sistently good form until the final range.
He had made 33, 32, and 33, and with 93
he was alongside Meschke and Potts. The
country brigade were strongly in evidence
on the 97 mark, C; Forge (N.S.W.) getting
there with a possible at 600 yards. Brood,
of Peterborough, secured one less. Gerald
Addison, a young shot who has had Bisley
experience, looked like getting the century,
but he put one away on the outer the
last time he pulled the trigger.
,. t Two Fine Possibles.
The Caulfield City Club champion, Percy
Pavey, who had failed, came to hand with
a possible when shooting was resumed r.t
600 yards' at 2 o'clock, 10 shots being fired.
This brought him well into line with the
leaders.. His score was 143. and then W
Green went one better. He put on 48—
a capital effort. .Then S. W. Mclntyre,
of Yarragon (V.), also put on the pos
sible, and ran to 143, and F. E. Barkla
also did well and rattled on 48, and
equalled the score. One of the last
down at the range was Dewar, and he
fired most carefully. He scored eight
bulls, but the last two got away an inch
or two on the left. His 48' took him
to 146, -which was two past.J. H. Wil
iams (V.) and Green. ? The Victorian
had made 45, but he had previously led
the Adelaide Club man by three. J. T
Lake (Reedb»l3 Club) then made his pre
sence felt. His second business sh.it was
a magpie, and he spoilt a. string of bulls
eyes with a close inner, the result of the
eighth shot. This made him 143, and
within three points of the leader.
J. T. Lake's Fine Dual Shoot.
At 3.43 o'clock the riflemen finally went
down at the 700 yards range. The con
ditions were still most difficult, the fish
tail wind being changeable. Dewar did
not remain long in the lead, for he broke
down badly. P. Pavey (V.) followed on
rather well, however, and totalled 185. He
scored 42, a total which Green also' man
aged, and he ran to 186; but J. H. Wil
liams dropped two points and receded
to 184. Another Victorian in S
W. Mclntyre did. better, and his
44 after a highest possible score was suffi
cient to advance him to 187. James Lake
equalled his . previous shoot— 47. -His.
fourth, fifth, and sixth shots were inners.
Ninety-four points was a fine even per
formance, which took him well in the lead
with 190, the next: being Mclntyre, who,
like Nobelius, is a Gippslander. E.'E.
Koster, who had shot well just prior
to luncheon, maintained form,, and with
a brace of.45*s, he advanced to 184; and
ranged level in ninth position with J.
H. Williams. ? ?
Although no official total for the five
ranges was announced, a survey of the
list resulted:— J.T. Lake (Reedbeds), 190;
w ™ McInt-™ (Tarragon, Vic), 187;
W. Thompson' (-, Vic). C. P. Nobe

w-ir- Bar-fla JGawler), 185: md J. H
Williams (Melbourne), and E. E. Kostei
(Cyclists), 184. , ..
Shooting will be resumed at 8.45 o'clock
this morning, the ranges being 600 yards,
809 yards, and 900 yards. . ?
