INDIA AND TIBET.
AN EFFORT TO INITIATE TRADE -
RELATIONS.
London. June 25.
Mjr. Francis Edward Younghusband,
C.I.E., who is a gold medallist of the Royal
Geographical -Souiety, and Mr. Claude
White, as representing India, will during
July meet in conference in the Indian
native state of Sikkim some of the chief
officials of Tibet, with the view of endea
vouring to arrange for trade intercourse
between India ond that country.
The state of Sikkini, which, has a popula
tion of. 160,000, is situated in the Eastern
Himalayas, suid is under the protection of
tiie British, who, by virtue of a convention
concluded with China In 1890, have exclu
sive control of the internal administration
and frontier relations.' There arc easy
passes through the mountains in the north
into Tibet, with which country there nughl
be a larae trade but for the persistent op
position of the Tibetan rulers.
