THE LEICESTER
- ELECTION.
LABOR PARTY SPLIT.
MR. MACDONALD TO SEEK NEW
CONSTITUENCY.
LONDON, June 26.
Great interest is being taken in the election
for the seat rendered vacant by the
resignation of Mr. Crawshay Williams,
Liberal M.P. for Leicester. Polling takes
place on Friday.
A division has arisen in the ranks of the
Labor Party over their candidate. The
National Executive put forward Mr. Ban
ton., but the Leicester branch of the party
decided to support Mr. Hartley, a Socialist.
The Labor Party yesterday carried a resolution
declaring that the Leicester branch's
encouragement of Mr. Hartley's candidature
is a grave violation of national party
discipline, and will inevitably lead to a
considerable disruption of -the Labor forces.
The incident, it is added, will compel Mr.
J. Ramsay Macdonald, the leader of the
party, to sever his connection with Leices-
ter.
It should be explained that Leicester
returns two members, Mr. Macdonald being
one. The Trades Council at Leicester are
supporting the candidature of Mr. Hartley.
