The English Mail.— The P. and 0. |
R.M.3. Himalaya passed Capo Borda ab 1
o'olook this morning, and is due at about
. 8 o'clock.
A Flourishing Foiiest Reserve. —The
Conservator of Forests (Mr. W. Gill) returned
on Thursday from a visits of inspection to tha
Forest Reserve, in the Hundred of Wanilla,
Port Lincoln. During the inspection he de
termined on the area to be cleared for planta
tion operations next season. The planting
carried out during the Beaaon just parsed has
been exceedingly successful, aa on examining
the trees planted (aums of various kinds) fully
00 par cent, were found in excellent growing
condition. The tree3 in the older plantations are
also in a vary vigorous stats, numbers planted
three years ago now ranging in hoight from 14
ft. to IS ft., with stem girth of !1 in. to 12 in. at
a height of 2 ft. from the ground. The Con
servator ree&rda tbe results attained on this
reserve as very satisfactory, more especially
aa the land operated on, covered as it ia by
grass-trees and other scrubby vegetation, in
universally regarded in the locality as useless
for agricultural purposes, and of but little
value even for grazing.
The Population of Victoria.— Tha esti
mated population of Victoria on September oO
was 1,174, 916, which showed an increase of 1,4 17
as from June 30. During the quarter the regis
tered birtb.3 numbered 8,t-57 and tho regiatered
deaths 3, 6 IS ; the oxces3 of the former over
the latter being 5,039, or 130 per cent. As
compared with the corresponding quarter of
1S93, the births in the quarter under notice
were fewer by 936 and the deaths by 7S0. The
recorded arrivals by aea numbered 15,055, but
the recorded departures by sea numbered as
many aa 17,153, the apparent loss by oxcess of
emigration over immigration being 2,073.
Unrecorded departures, moreover, estimated
at 1,519, being taken into account, the actual
Joss is found to have basn greater than this,
viz., 3,592.
Oor Business Relations with the 'West. —
Messra. \V. K. Siiuins & Go. are, we hoar,
negotiating for the purchase of a brewery site
on tbe eouthern bank of the River Swan, at
Fremantle. Mr. E. Simins has recently
returned from the Murohison gold fields, and
his report, after an inspection of the breweries
at P#lh and Fremantle, is said to bo Rdffi
cient to justify the erection of a brewery by
the firm of which he was a representative at
the principal port of Western Australia.
The Pastoral Laws.— A requisition is
being largely signed in the city by commercial
men, traders, and others not directly inte
rested in the pastoral industry, asking the
Mayor to oall a public meeting at an early
date to discuss in a friendly way and free from
party politics the forfeiture clause in the Pas
toral Bill now before Parliament.
The Hon. Dr. Camit.ell, M.L.C.— Wo are
sorry to learn that the illneas of the Hon. Dr.
Campbell, M.L.C., has been both serious and
painful. Although a distressing neuralgia is
one of it3 loading features the diheaso has been
what ia known as Herpea Tester, of an un
usually severe typs, upon the brow and side of
the head. The pain accompanying the erup
tion ia always severe and exceedingly in
tractible to treatment. Dunn? the last two
days; no additional vosiolas have appeared, and
it is hoped by Dr. W. M. Campbell and Dr.
Way that the worst time of the attack has
passed. The pain, too, has considerably
abated, tha doctor having been able on Friday
to leave his bad. Should no relapse occur his
medical friends hops to seo him completely
free from pain in about a week's time.
The First Test Match.— Few cricket
matches ever played in Australia have excited
more widespread interest than theonebegunyes
terday at Sydney between Stoddart's English
Eleven and the cho3en of Australia. When
it was known ab Adelaide that Blaokham had
won the t033, that the weather was fine, and
the wiaket good all sorts of extravagant
notions were entertainad aa to the score which
wonld be knocked off the English bowling.
The (sensational downfall of the first three
wickets, including those of Lyon3 and Darling,
caused even some optimists to despair, and
great disappointment was expressed. As,
however, tha grand stand of Giffen and Ireda!-»
progressed spirits rose once more, although
momentarily they ware depressed aa the
rumour want round that; Gitfen was
bowlsd for 48. Satisfaction was every
where evinced that our own champion had
saved his country's criokat reputation, and
many telegrams were dispatched to G. G. at
Googee congratulating him upon his magnifi
cent soore. lredale'a Buoce3s wa3 the subject
of mosb complimentary comment, and it con
verted many critics into warm advocates,
whilo tha outcome of Gregory 'a brilliant
batting also gratified those who have always
believed in hia pluck and ability. Until the
last wires came through intense interest waa
manifested in the progress of tha game, and
from all quarters of city, suburbs, and
oountry cama tha eager enquiry ' What in
the latest cricket?' Naturally the wonderful
recovery of the Australians caused the deopest
satisfaction.
Canon CAivTKR. — Canon Franc'i3 E. Carten
M.A., the well-known Church of England
missioner, will arrive in Adelaide by the
Melbourne express thia morning, and will
leave by the R.M.S. Auatralia on Wednesday
next. He ia announced to preach to-morrow
in the morning at Christ Church, North Ade
laide, and in the evening at St. Paul's, Port
Adelaide.
Children's Christmas Citeer.— A meeting
of the Executive Committee administering
the Children's Christmas Cheer Fund was held
in the Mayor's Parlour on Friday afternoon,
and was well attended. Mr. J. H. Finlayaon
preaidod. Tho Hon. Treasurer reported that
the subscriptions in hand and promised
amounted to about £H0, and referred to the
necessity for further donations. An allotment
on the basis of tha probable total receipts was
agreed upon in the ca;e of praoticully all the
institutions which had participated in the dis
tribution in previous yea.ru. Provision waa
also made for the visitation of siok poor
children in their own hornea in the city, it
being, of course, understood that tha extent
to which thia branch of tha oounraitteo'a work
can ba carried out depends on the additional
responses which may be received to the re
quest for contributions from tho pubiio. And
as only a few days are leCc in which to com
plete the necessary arrangements the hopa
waa expressed that; the friends of tho move
ment may be prompt with their assistance.
Incandescent Gas ucht.— Pro fossor Carl
ton Lambert, M.A., F.R.A.S., -fco., in an
exhaustive report on the Welsbach Incandes
cent gasburner, says : — 'I have had one of
them under special observation since Sep
tember '27, 1S03, to July 2ti, 1S94, for aa en
durance test under practical conditions. It
was lighted every day, and has burned for a
total of over 1,200 hoars. It is in daily use,
and ia as efficient as ever, and gives the high
illuminating powor of fifty-one candles on a
consumption of 3*8 cubio ft. of gas. The
unaided light of thia burner bas aufBoiently
illuminated a room of 3,250 ft. oubio capacity
for 1,200 hours, at a cost of Id. for nine
hours.'
'Crime and Criminals.'— Mr. T. Hewit
son delivered his well-known lecture on the
above subject before the members of the
Y.M.C.A. Literary Society on Friday
evening. Mr. A. Mackie presided over a large
audience, who took a great interest in the
eubjeot, which Mr. Hewitson handled skil
fully.
Naval News.— The Karr.akatta ib on tha
way to Sydney from Briebane. Word has
been received of the arrival at Samoa of the
Wallaroo, also the German cruiser Falke,
from Sydnoy. Tho Falko takes the place of
tbe Buzzard at Apia, and a message from
Auckland advises the arrival there of tho
Buzzard. She will deck ad Auckland, and
remain for a few week?, returning thence to
Samoa to relieve the F&lke, and tho latter
vessel will 'go to Sydney to dock and refit. On
Wednesday tha loug-lookod-for Croscent is
duo at Thursday Island, on her way to Sydney
with reliefs for the Orlando and the Lizard,
$
