lists of what he con

best varieties for cul

'bearing in mind
colour, fragrance,

'Doubtless there will be a variety of
opinions expressed,' he adds, ? 'perhaps .
almost as many as there are varieties of
roses. To' those familiar with a large
number it fe increasingly difficult to choose,
Bay, a dozen,* from- 600 varieties. There
is a far greater number than that cata
louged in our Australian catalogues alone.
'It is very interesting to note the dif
ferences in opinion, and I was very sur
Srised to read that Mr. R. L. Smith was
iscarding Countness of Qosfora. My ex
perience is that this rose, like others sub
ject to mildew requires an open situation
and an occasional spraying with sulphur
solution in the spring, or whenever mil
dew appears. *., ?
'One must bear in mind tho- conditions
under which' tho disease thrives. Irre
gular watering is often ' the cause of mil
dew in our dry climate— sometimes too
much, but more -often 'too little. Merely
spraying the bush with water is inviting
the enemy. . .
*, 'I find that Countess of GosCord is par
ticularly suitable for decoration under elec
tric light, and our friends see roses then
more often than they . do ' by daylight.' ?
Rose Society Founder Places Lorraine Lee First

one of the founders of the S.A. National
Rose Society, - lion, secretary, and ' a pro
minent exhibitor for several years states: —
The . Register rose plebiscite will un
doubtedly arouse great interest among rose
lovers. - - ? ? ? ' - ?
So many good new roses nave come to
the front since the last plebiscite that it
is very necessary ' to have the opinion of
rosegrowers again,' -' and ' this . plebiscite
comes at a very opportune time..
Disease resistant varieties with a strong
constitution should be favoured. Many
beautiful roses :of the Pernetiana ?clas.s
suffer so badly from die back that they
must be left out. .
