THE UNÍVEJWTT BALL.
One of the leading events in the social
calendar is the ball held under the auspices
of the Adelaide University Sports Association,
and this year's gathering in the Unley
City Hall on Thursday night was as pronounced
a success as any of the twenty-six
balls which have preceded it. A departure
from a long-established custom was
made in not holding it at the Conservatorium,
but the change was made this year
at the request of the University Council.
The latter body, nevertheless, extended its
cordial patronage to the association, and,
in fact, the majority of the members of
the council attended last evening. Over 400
ladies and gentlemen were present. The
hall was effectively decorated with large
red poppies and asparagus, and festoons of
red and white electric globes. It was the
first occasion on which the hall had been
used for a gathering of the kind since the
installation of the electric light, and the
effect was pleasing.
His Excellency the Governor, Lady
Bosanquet, and Miss Bosanquet were received
by Lady Way and Dr. Barlow (Vice
Chancellor), and Messrs. S. D. Ronald and
J.- C. Mayo (hon. secretaries of the University
Sports Association). The arrival of
the viceregal party was announced by a
Light Horse trumpeter, and as they proceeded
down the bWl the orchestra played
the National Anthem. The members of
the viceregal set, who danced the Lancers,
were his Excellency the Governor and Lady
Way; Dr. Barlow and Lady Bosanquet;
Professor E. C. Stirling and Mrs. H.
Girdlestone; Mr. J. R. Anderson. K.C., and
Mrs. A. A Hamilton: the Rev. H. Girdle-
stone, MA. and Miss Bosanquet; Dr. J.
A. G. Hamilton and Mrs. J. H Anderson;
Mr. W. J. Isbister and Mrs. G. Brookman;
and Mr. G. Brookman and Miss Stirling.
There were 34 young ladies in the three
debutante sets, and their partners were
University undergraduates.
The arrangements were admirably carried
out, and the fine weather added to the
enjoyment of the company. The joint secretaries
(Messrs. Ronald and Mayo are to
be congratulated upon the unqualified success
of the ball. . They were well supported
by the following committee, who
were responsible for the decorations:
Mesdames H. Darnley' Naylor, A. A.
Hamilton, and J. R. Anderson, Misses Stir-
ling," Jessop, and Wade, Dr. Barlow, Professors
Ennis, Henderson, and Naylor, Drs.
0. Mainwaring, C Yeatman and O. Moulden
and Messrs. G. J. R. Murray, R. L
Wassmann. N. LeMessurier, H. H Swift,
M.. Giles. H. A. Nott, and G. A. Harvey.
An excellent supper was served in the han
queting-room, the catering. being done by
Bridtncll's. The music was supplied by
Messrs. Dew and Hines' orchestra.
