GERMANY AND
MODERNISM.
QUIET HINT TO THE VATICAN.
BERLIN, March 3.
Speaking in the Prussian Diet yesterday,
the President of the Ministry (Dr. von
Bethmann-Hollweg) conveyed a quiet but
emphatic warning to the Vatican concern-
ing the decree requiring Roman Catholic
priests and teachers to take an oath against
Modernism.
The Government, the Minister said, declined
to dissolve the Roman Catholic
faculties at the universities, but they were
decidedly of the opinion that the Roman
Catholic clergy and teachers who taught
German and history in the State schools
should not do so after they had subscribed
to the Modernist oath.
