ASSAULTED GIRL-For having as
saulted a girl tunder the age of 12 years,

assembled" under the leadership of Miss

Dorman. Several- patriotlc congs were
reindered. Tie visitors were thanked
by the headnmaster,'(Mr. 0. A. McCall).
At the Convent School the Warden and
Messrs. Leicester and 'Dorman Were the
speakers, the Viqtoria League being rep
resented by Mesdlames Ashworth and
Heath. They were welcomed by Father
Shaw. Cr. J. IH. tockliff, accompanied

Storey, representing the Devonport Coun
cil of Cthrches, .and by Msesdames. A.
C. Dean and L. F. Briggs. represent

SOCIAL-On Thursday evening .In the
hall a farewell social was tendered to
Pte; H. Johnson, who has joined the
A.I.F. A programme rendered by the
local school children was enjoyed by the
large gathering which spent the remain
der of the evening in games, dancing
and community singing. Visitors were

low" brought the evening to a close.
SHEFFIELD
DANCE-A patriotic dance was held In
tle Town Hall on Saturday night, and
by permission of the sponsors of the
function, a brief interval between dances
was devoted to an earnest call for re
cruits for the A.I.F; Major J. hi.
Clerke introduced the speakers, the first
of whom was Major A. A. Evans, who
said he would like them t% listen to
Warrant Officer Newman, who had Just
returned from service overseas. Warrant
Oflicer Nerwman spoke at some lengthll of
his experience. in bomb stricken Lon
don and Libyn. Hie pointed out tlhe
urgent need for reinforcements. Ills
remarks were endorsed by Prirate Shad
bolt of the A.IF.
ULVERSTONE
EMPIRE DAY.-Emplre Day was cele
brated in the schools of th% Ulverstone
district. Owing to inclement weather
tile proceedings were held on the school
verandahs. Addresses werde, given by the
Wardtn.(Cr. J. I-I. Pearson) and Re-. 1.
C. Brown. Also present were Crc. C.
Scurrah, M..0. O. Laktin and Mlessrs. W.
Frith and A. Love; who represented the
Ri.S.L. SIr. F. E. Parsons. uth head
master, welcomed the visitors. IHe stated
that over £500 had been contributed; by
tile teachers and children by war Rsevings
certicates. Sir. A. Qtantrell sounded

the honour roll.
WEST KENTISH
FAREWELL-A farewell was tendered
Private F. Juhb on Tuesday evening,
there being a large gathering of friends
from Roland. Staverton arid West Ken
tlsh. He enlisted In Queensland and
came home to spenid leave with his
parents at Roland. Mr.' A. Smith,
Deputy Warden, on behalf of thbsose pre
sent. presented Pte. Jubb with a wristlet
watch und guard. ,Mr. P. T. Cox and
MIr. John Braid also spoke. 'After sup
per the evening closed with dantcing. Pte.
Jtbb's brother. Athol, enlisted In West
ern Australia and is now serving witlh
the forces oversees.
EUCHRE - A euchre tournament was
held at the home of Mlr. and Mrs. John
Braid on Thursday evening for the Com
forts Fund. In spite of the very bad
weather. there.was a good • attendance
and a satlisfactory amountralsed. Prizes
were won by Mises Allison Husband and
Mr. N'. Carey and two consolation prizes
went to SIrs. Hart and Master Bryan
eorey. Supper was erved.
