PRESIDENTIAL NOMIINATION.
OHICAGO, June 27.
A rapprochement is probable between'
Messrs. Roosevelt and Bryau. It is
even suggested that the parties should
agree to a compromise candidate, but
official headquarters deny the story.
BIAIL'?MORE, June 2S.
In spite of Mr. Bryan's ovations, it is
genesrally accepted that the contest for
the Democratic nomination les between
Messrs. Wilson and Clark. In the test
roll-call Wilson polled 049 and Clark
437.
A sensation was caused .by Tammany
casting l0 New York votes in M\r. Wli
son's favour.
Mr. James, a friend of Mr. Bryan, was
eleoted chairman of the convention.
Mr. Bryan moved a resolution demand
ing a withdrawal of the delegates under
obligations to represent the privilege
seeking classes. He asserted that an
attempt was being made to sell the De
mocra'ts into bondage, and assailed
Messrs. Pierpont Morgan, Belmont, and
Ryan.
Messrs. Belmont and Ryan, who are
delegates to the convention, refused im
mediate consideration. The police re
peatedly restored order.
The convention, however, passed a re
solution at Mr. Bryan's instance opposing
the nomination of any candidate repro
senting or under obligations to Mr. Pier
pont Morgan, Thomas Ryan, August Bel
mont, or other members of the privilege
hunting or favour-seeking classes.
A violent scene greeted the resolutiori,
but it was carried by a large majority.
The police were unable to maintain
order in the galleries, which were so
greatly crowded.
The convention adopted a platform
lowering the tariff in favour of Oanadian
products and the encouragement of
United States farmers with a view to
preventing them emigrating Canada
