RECORD CROWDS.
A Fremantle Distinction.
It was announced at a meeting of
the league last night that attend
ance records had been broken this
season. Mr. W. R. Orr, the secre
tary said that the crowd of 10,121
at Fremantle Oval last Saturday was
the biggest ever recorded at a nor
mal interclub match in this State.
'Tt is fitting that this record should
go to Fremantle," he said, "for there
Australian football first saw the light
of day in this State. In those days
he Fremantle Oval was known as
the Barrack Green."
The highest flgures previously
were: June 3, 1935, Subiaco v. West
Perth, at Subiaco, 9,578; May 27,
1939, East Perth v. Claremont, at
Perth Oval, 9,217; June 3, 1939. Su
biaco v. West Perth, at Subiaco,
9,005. The aggregate figures for May
11 this year were the highest on
record and these figures were broken
on May 18 and again last Saturday.
It was agreed to avoid a clash be
tween the grand final and the
cricket match between the English
Test cricketers and a State team on
October 12. The WA.C.A. had con
ferred with the league executive
committee and was deeply appreci
ative of the league's co-operation,
according to the aecretary's report,
but the league was opposed to alter
ing its fixtures in future seasons.
The president (Mr. W. Stooke)
pointed out that the Interstate
schoolboys' carnival would not be
held in Perth this year as had been
arranged, owing to transportation
difficulties. This would leave August
3 open for league games. It was
decided that the permit committee
should readjust the fixtures to avoid
the clash of important matches on
October 12.
Delegates agreed that the cover
ing of cricket pitches, as was done
at Fremantle Oval last Saturday,
was most desirable and that other
grounds authorities should be asked
to follow that example.
