Convincing Evidence in Adelaide.
The Case of
Mrs. S. E. BAKER.
(BY AN ADELAIDE REPORTER.)
A word picture that is likely to attract
the notice of all those who take an interest
in matters which affect various members of
the community is painted below by Mrs.
Sarah Eliza Baker, of No. 20 Moore-street,
Adelaide, who says :—
" Many years ago I was very ill with an
internal complaint that set at defiance all
the skill which the doctors I consulted
could command."
"Were they treating you with physic?"
queried the reporter.
" That is just what they were treating
me with, as from one gentleman I had no
less than forty bottles of his medicine dur-
ing a period of a year and five months that
I was under his care. I did not benefit by
the use of it, though, so I thought it high
time to make a change and see if another
doctor could do me any good, but nothing
worth mentioning resulted, and in the end
I was told that they could do nothing more
for me, and that I would never be any
better. That sounded like a death knell in
my ears, but I did not care very much, as I
had nothing to live for only days and nights
of unmerciful suffering that could not be
overcome excepting by death, so the sooner
it came the sooner I would be out of my
misery, I thought "
" Where were the pains, Mrs Baker ? "
"Everywhere, pretty well, but I think
those in the stomach were as violent as any,
because they used to make me bend double
sometimes, and after the attacks of spasms
passed away I felt so exhausted that I
could hardly stand on my feet. But upon
my life, I do not know which to say was the
worst when I come to think of it, for I was
nearly mad with neuralgia. Weeks and
weeks at a stretch I have gone without
getting any sleep through that horrible
complaint assailing me, and if the sharp,
piercing pains, that affected my face and
head were not enough to wreck a woman's
life — well, I do not know what could do it.
I was nearly out of my senses at any rate,
and more than once I felt so strangely
feeble and so much inclined to collapse
altogether that I could not help thinking
I was surely doomed. In my face there
was not the slightest particle of colour, and
I had got so frightfully thin that had you
seen me walking along you would have
thought it was a ghost coming. My left
side was the seat of much pain, which made
me squirm and writhe in agony, and, as if in
collusion with the rest of my torments,
nervousness came to help in worrying the
life out of me. I used to lie in my bed of a
night shaking and quivering with fear,
though why I did so I knew not, unless the
strange foolish fancies that came to my
head made me. Probably so, for they were
awful thoughts — somebody peeping in at
the window, or else a formidable person at
the foot of the bed, and all sorts of ugly
faces grinning in the darkness — those were
the ideas that made me dread the night
coming, for I was really in a state of terror
the whole time."
" You would not be half so nervous in the
day, would you ? "
"Now, wasn't I? You would scarcely be-
lieve it, but when a knock came or anything
like that, I could have almost screamed with
fear, and the shock I got each time was
really dreadful. Such a nervous woman
you never saw — always twitching, and my
heart palpitating so freely that I used to
think it would cause me to choke. With a
wretched taste in my mouth and my tongue
almost white, with no desire for food, and
with such a heavy swollen feeling in my eyes
that I could hardly open them, I used to crawl
out of bed of a morning and wonder how on
earth I would survive the day, with this
loadstone of torture round my neck that
was dragging me down to the grave. The
suffocating sensations in my chest, which
must have been connected in some way with
a heaviness there that I could not account
for, was almost overbearing, and the aches
in my loins were nearly as bad."
"But surely you got relief for some of
these symptoms after so much treatment ? "
"No; you need not doubt me, for it is
an actual fact that when the doctors said
they could do no more for me, I was worse
off then in health than when I first con-
sulted them, and it was only through read-
ing of a woman who had been ill for twelve
years and was then cured by Clements Tonic
that I decided to try that medicine myself,
and that is how I am here now and able to
tell you that Clements Tonic saved my life.
I thought if it would cure her it might be
able to do something for me, and there was
no mistake in thinking so. My word, if I
could only spare the time I would willingly
go round to every house in the city and
personally enlighten the inmates regarding
this extraordinary cure of mine, for I am
sure there are plenty of women suffering like
I did through not knowing what Clements
Tonic is capable of doing."
" Was it long before you got relief from
your nervousness?"
"It took a little time, of course, because
the disease had such a firm hold upon me ;
but if it had taken years to cure me it
would have still been a wonderful achieve-
ment, because no other medicine could do
it. Considering all things, the time occupied
in restoring my health properly was in-
credibly short, and everybody I was
acquainted with were spellbound with
amazement; for any day they would have
been less surprised to hear of my death than
my recovery. But Providence was very
good to me, and He saw fit to release me
from bondage at last. With the pain-
soothing qualities of Clements Tonic em-
ployed I soon regained sufficient ease to
enable me to fall off to sleep every night;
and what a blessing that was ! I began to
feel hungry, and from the food I ate I gained
a little strength, which, added to each day,
mounted up until I was quite strong again;
and, while this was happening, I was
enjoying more freedom from my nervous
affections each week. My nights no longer
had any terror for me — indeed, I looked
forward to them now, for when I busied my-
self about the house all day I used to be
prepared for bed, and it was lovely to sleep
as soundly as I did. My heart had given
up palpitating and my colour was coming
buck. The pains in my side and stomach
were completely quelled, and my breathing
was no longer interfered with by the oppres-
sion in my chest, so taken altogether, I felt
like a woman newly put together, and ever
since I have had health as sound as any
woman in Australia."
" You certainly look very hearty ? "
"And I'll remain so whilst Clements
Tonic is handy, and I hope you will publish
these statements in any form you would
like to."
STATUTORY DECLARATION.
I, SARAH ELIZA BAKER, of 20 Moore-street,
Adelaide, in the State of South Australia,
do solemnly and sincerely declare that I have
carefully read the annexed document, con-
sisting of four folios, and consecutively numbered
from one to four, and that it contains and is a true
and faithful account of my illness and cure by
Clements Tonic ; and also contains my full permission
to publish in any manner my statements- which I
give voluntarily, and without receiving any payment;
and I make this solemn declaration conscientiously be-
lieving the same to be true, and by virtue of the
provisions of an Act made and passed in the sixth
year of the reign of his late Majesty King William
the Fourth, intituled "An Act to repeal an Act of
this present Session of Parliament, intituled "An Act
for the more effectual abolition of Oaths and Affir-
mations taken and made in various Departments of
the State, and to substitute Declarations in lieu
thereof, and for the more entire suppression
of voluntary and extra-judicial Oaths and Affida-
vits, and to make other provisions for the abolition
of unnecessary Oaths.' "
Declared and subscribed at Adelaide
in the State of South Australia, this
twenty-third day of October, one thou-
sand nine hundred and three, before me
