KALGOORLIE. Jan. 24.-Admit-

Kalgoorlie, at 5.30 p.m. yesterday
suffering from severe injuries re
ceived in an explosion at Grant's
Patch, James McKenzie (62), mar-
ried, of Hanbnry-street, Kalgoorlie,
died at 1 o'clock this morning. Wil-
liam Marshall (64), married, of
Rhodes-street, Kalgoorlie, was killed
outright by the explosion.
The Ora Banda Amlagamated,
which normally employs about 70
men, had been closed for 23 months.
Recently about 12 men were engaged
to prepare for the re-opening of the
mine and a pump chamber was be-
ing prepared at the 600ft. plat.
Large rocks were being cleared by
sand blasting and the second charge
of two plugs of gelignite had just
been lit when McKenzie and Mar-
shall arrived at the level in a cage
to make an inspection of the work.
They received the full blast of the
explosion.
Marshall, originally the chief en-
gineer on the mine, had only re-
cently recommenced duties. McKen-
zie was one of the original pros-
pectors of the mine and, with three
other men, had been engaged on
maintenance while the mine was
closed.
