EGYPT BEGINS TO
ARM HER TROOPS
Cairo, Monday: The necessary wea-
pons for the Egyptian armed forces and
National Guard (volunteers) were being
obtained through secret channels, with the
help of officers sent abroad on missions.
Major-Gen. Abdel Hakim
Amer (Egyptian comman-
der-in-chief) told an Egyp-
tian newspaper this at Ah-
rain today. ,
"Hals was necessary "be-
cause some countries are
exerting pressure to obstruct
the arming of our forces,"
said he.
Egyptian arms factories
would be-producing in the
near future. '
Concerning Middle East
security, Gen. Amer said:
"The Arab countries cannot
be forced to the convection
that a threat to their secur-
ity comes from the eastern
camp, so long as they live
under the threat posed by
foreign troops which occupy
their territories."
Tlie presence of those
troops was a real threat to
peace. So long as it con-
tinued, neither promises nor
aid would tempt the Arab
peoples to become involved i
in world problems and to'
join military alliances.
