O'Donohue Makes Viewi
Clear; Attitude
To Replacement
(By "IROQUOIS.")
Although Peter O'Donohue, the West Perth coach,
played well in the first two matches of the season
he would not hesitate to stand down if it was thought
that the inclusion of another player would improve
the side.
O'Donohue made this clear
yesterday afternoon when
discussing the team's future
prospects.
"If at any stage the team
would appear to benefit by a
change which would mean I
would have to be replaced, I
would readily agree to stand
down," O'Donohue declared.
"When a footballer has a
player to watch,. the ball to
concentrate on and tactical
moves to observe, he is sure to
miss some points.
"If I did not play in the lea
gue team, 1 might have a bet
ter chance of studying the
players' form and also of gaug
ing better the necessary moves
to be made."
O'Donohue expected West
Perth to open its winning ac
count in the match against
East Perth on Saturday.
Short Sprints"
At training last night he gave
his players short sprints.
"Although the team has
enough stamina, it appeared to
be a little sluggish last Sat
urday and speed is. what it
needs," O'Donohue said.
Tony Yaksich, one of West
Perth's best players last Satur
day did not train last night be
cause of an injured ankle. The
injury is not likely to prove,
serious.
Len Harman and Eddie Wylde
had a rest from training, but
all the other league men ap
peared.
Ray Scott, the centre-forward,
had another run and after his
solid game in the seconds last
Saturday be probably will be
selected.for the league side on
Saturday.
West Perth is now last on the
premiership list, but it start
ed off the 1951 season by los
ing its first three games and
then went on to win the grand
final.
H eathcote's
Injury
Improves
Bill -Heathcote, the East Fre
mantle utility player, who was
injured when playing in the
"Derby" last Saturday, is mak
ing a quick recovery.
Most of the soreness had
gone out of his bruised leg last
night and he might be available
for selection against Claremont
next Saturday.
This will depend on the result
of a further try-out tomorrow
night.
Harry Regan, who played an
effective game on the half-for
ward line against South Fre
mantle, had a sore shin" last
night and he trained in his bare
feet.
He should be fit and available
for selection against Claremont.
East Fremantle's hopes of a
premiership win have soared as
a result of the splendid "Derby"
success.
The players trained with add
ed zest last night.
The Mayor of East Fremantle
(Mr. W. Wauhop), who is a
great supporter of the club,
said to Mr. J. Dolan, the East
Fremantle club's president, after
the "Derby": "Keep this up and
we will get our new grand.
stand."
Charge Against
Dixon Dismissed
The league protest and dis
putes board last night dismiss
ed a charge against D. Dixon
(South Fremantle). He was
reported to have deliber
ately charged W. Heathcote
(East Fremantle) during the
first quarter of the "Derby" at
Fremantle Oval last Saturday.
Dixon was reported by the
goal umpire, D. Penman.
Masseur To Decide
Carter's Fitness
Whether or not Don Carter, the Subiaco captain,
will play with his team against Perth on Saturday
will depend on a masseur's report.
The masseur will examine
Carter's injured left ankle to
night.
Carter said at training last
night that his ankle had im
proved greatly since he receiv
ed the injury in the first match
of the season against Swan Dis
tricts.
He restricted his training last
night to jogging around the
oval in sand shoes and made
no attempt to kick the ball.
Carter, a brilliant rover, was
missed by his team last Sat
urday.
His return to the side for the
hard match against Perth
should greatly improve Subi
aco's prospects.
Injured Knee
Don Jackson, who badly in
jured his knee in the match
against Swan Districts, will not
play for at least three weeks.
Jackson impressed with his
early form at centre-half back,
and strengthened Subiaco's de
fence.
Max Gamble, a centre-line
player, has recovered from a
bruised heel and trained well
last night. He may play on
Saturday.
Charlie Strang, the coach, is
still concentrating on team
work.
"Subiaco has a young team
and its system must be devel
oped," he said.
"With so many new, young
players it will take time for the
side to settle down.
"The Subiaco team should do
much better in the second
round," Strang added.
Ex-Scholars'
Fixtures
The following are the fixtures
for Sunday in the Fremantle
Ex-Scholars' competition:
North Premantle v Palmyra-East
Premantle, at North Fremantle:
Fremantle v BSwnboirne-Cottesloe,
at AHen Park; Mosman Park v
South Fremantle. at Mosman Park.
Swan Players
Recover
Ron Payne, the Swan Districts
rover, and Tilly Limana, the
centre half-forward, who left
the field because of injuries in
the last quarter last Saturday,
were fit when they trained last
night.
Both players will be available
for selection against South Fre
mantle at Bassendean next' Sat
urday.
Payne slightly bruised his hip
and Limana dislocated a finger.
Payne and Limana trained ex
ceptionally well last night.
Ron Hoy was another player
who impressed at training.
Bob Harvey, who gave a good
display for the Swan Districts
second team on Saturday, for
merly played at Norseman.
Keith Lunny, a ruckman with
the second team, dislocated his
collarbone last Saturday and
has decided to retire from foot
ball.
SPEED COMES THROUGH A
THOROUGH FITNESS TEST
Eric Speed, the former
Guildford Grammar School
player, came through a
thorough test last night and
may soon reappear in the
East Perth team.
Speed has been unable to play
in early matches this season
because of an injury to hiss
back.
The heavily-built defence
player looked very fit as he
trained last night.
Joe O'Dea could not play last
Saturday because of a broken
finger. He will have to miss a
few matches.
Frank Allen, the centre wing
man, who wanted to be thor
oughly fit before playing in the
league side, is now reasonably
satisfied with his fitness.
He may be seen on the East
Perth wing against West Perth
on Saturday.
Last season West Perth was a
"hoodoo" team for Allen.
In the first match of the sea
son between East Perth and
West Perth Allen broke his
collarbone.
In the third meeting of the
teams, just before the finals,
he badly injured an ankle.
He has not played in a lea
gue match since.
Ron Brown, who is a coun
try traveller, was able to train
last night.
He probably will be one of
East Perth's key men in the
game against West Perth.
