ST. WARDEN AN1 SKIPTON WIN CUP DIVISIONS
Melbourne Cup Hero
Stages Great Finish
To Defeat Amana
FLEMINGTON.-St. Warden in winning the first division
of the Caulfield Cup at Flemington this afternoon
created one of the greatest surprises in the long history of
the race. He started at 100 to 1 and his success dumb-
founded racegoers.
Skipton returned to his brilliant form when he won
the second division of the Caulfield Cup under the heavy
weight of 9.2. His victory was not in doubt over the last
furlong and a half, and on the post . Breasley was easing
him up.
St. Wanlen was a lons way back
carly, but gradually made up his
ground and racing to the front a
furlong from home he headed Heart's
Desire, and a belated efTort by Sim-
mering, to win by three-quarters of
a length. At no stage did Neutron
give his backers any hope.
On the other hand his stablemate,
Simmering, ran a great race. Two
fm'longs from home Simmering look-
ed" a likely winner, but she had to be
checked slightly and hung in.
When Simmering got clear she
finished with great dash but could not
catch St. Warden, and just failed by
inches to take second place from
Heart's Desire.
St. Warden, with The Joker, was
the oldest horse in the field and his
previous win prior to his success to-
day was in an eight and a half fur-
long handicap at Geelong on Septem-
ber 18. He had not won prior to that
success since he scored in the Veteran
Stakes at Flemington two years ago.
. Most of the jockeys reported that
the race was cleanly run, the time
2.30{ was fast, without approaching
the record.
St, Warden's success relieves tho
bookmakers of at least half their
liabilty for the Cup double, few even
laying a bet against him with any of
tho fancied Cup starters.
One of the surprises of the race
was that Tranquil Star, despite her
fl.G, was taken to the front. Tranquil
Star had the advantage of about
three lengths at the six furlongs and
approaching the turn she was still
going nicely, but' then drifted out
of the fight.
SKIPTON'S VICTORY
^MANA made a fine effort to win
- thc second division of thc Cup ir
making most of the running. After
being clear entering the straight he
was caught by Skipton a furlong and
three-quarters from home.
Today Skipton was doing bcttei
than usual. There were some amaz-
ing betting changes.
Temple Chief opened favorite or
thc course, but Damalis was suppor-
ted for a huge amount, and at barriei
riso he ousted Templo Chief from
favoritism.
A late demand caused Centenary
to firm ¿rom 15 to 1 to 7 to 1, and
he started at eights.,
FIRST SUCCESS
TfRANKLIN D. registered his first
. success-when he won the Bur
/ wood Handicap. He beat off several
challenges in tho straight to win from
. St; Fairy, with Thc Bohemian a close
third.
St. Fairy was not disgraced as he
was wide out most of the way.
A furlong and a half from home
Stormful seemed likely to win, but
soon afterwards Grey Box moved
through on the inside. However, Grey
Box's run had finished before the
post and, although St. Fairy battled
on gamely, he was overtaken b.v
Franklin D.
Tho Bohemian was always well
placed and he looked dangerous at thc
distance, but he only plugged on ovci
tho'last furlong.
KINTORE SPEEDY
jriNTORE, one of the fastest two.
year-olds in training, narrowlj
defeated Metro Star in the Gwyn Nur.
scry.
Although Kintore drew wide ht
dashed £o the front immediately UK
barrier rose and gradually workec
over to the running rails.
Two and a half furlongs from home
Kintore was about five lengths in f ronl
of the field and looked like having UT
easy victory when Metro Star put ir
his claim.
Although it looked impossible foi
Metro Star to bridge the gap. he fin
ished so fast that in another sfcridi
he would have won.
Although, he battled on, Kindel
Chick never looked like winning
Legal Coin, who will be improved bj
the .race, did best of the unplacet
division, Propontis also shaped well
WHIZBEAU A STAR
YyHlZBEAU came from nearly last
to score a brilliant-, victory over
Thc Rip and Clitoria in the Mona
Nursery.
Whizbeau, who was a pronounced
favorite, jumped away fairly well,
but there were only four horses be-
hind her when the field had galloped
about 150 yards, and she seemed un-
likely to win. She put up a great
effort in the last furlong to struggle
home from The Kip.
Miss Dorothy-exhibited exceptional
speed for three furlongs, but offered
little resistance when Clitoria ran past
her. At one starre Clitoria seemed
likely to win, but Whizbeau's speed
carried her to the front.
Clitoria shaped promisingly, but
well-backed runners in Ruction and
Bubbling were never dangerous.
DARK FELT SCORES
"RACKERS came into their own when
Dark Felt put up a really smart
performance to win the first division
of the Moonga Handicap.
Dark Felt was made a warm favor-
ite in a good betting race and, al-
though he was not too well placed
approaching the home turn he was
ridden so vigorously by V. Hartney
that he easily dashed up to the leader.
Ducal, a furlong from home.
Attorney revealed his best form for
a long time and ran second.
Queen Baccha was a long way back
half-way through the race, but finished
with a characteristic burst to run
third.
The former Adelaide gelding Duke-
dom showed speed in making thc run-
ning for nearly five furlongs, and
another former Adelaide sprinter.
Ducal, also showed promise.
AMAZING FEAT
rPHR favorite, Nagation, put up an
amazing performance to win the
second, division of the Moonga Han-
dicap. One of the last to leave thc
maciiine, Nagation was a long way
back at the turn where Plica was
nearly four lengths in front.
In tho straight Nagation finished
brilliantly to win running away by
three lengths, while Plica did not get
a place.
Nagation's performance places him
as a colt above .the ordinary.
