A DANGEROUS RAILWAY
CROSSING.
From J. H. KERIN, Willaston:—We
hare a very dangerous crossing about one
mile from the Gawler station on the main,
north line, known as "Whaling's" crossing.
There is a deep cutting on one side and
a sharp curve on the other side of the
(Tossing. ? Almost as soon as a passenger
train turns the curve it is on the crosdaj.
There is a wig-wag signal to take the piaec
of the crossing keeper, but that docs not
Kive sufficient warning. At times it docs
r.ot work correctly, and it is a poor pro
tection. I believe the change Ji?s becu
made to cut down expenses. What is
the expenditure of a few shillings a day
for a crossing keeper compared with the
Jobs of human life? Why not economise
in some other way? I hope the depart
ment will reinstate tlie crossing keeper at
an earijr date, and thus help to avert a
serious disaster.
