THE ACCIDENT AT MYPONGA.
Tft *pww VTiT*rrtw ni? Tin? prfiiarpw
Bir— In the Observer of baturday last I
read the following : —
' Serious Accident from a Falling Tbee.
— On Fridav. the 2nd February, a man in the
employ of Mr. Hewitt, at Torr Farm, My
ponga, in felling a tree was struck down by
the tailing branches. The accident was not
at first considered serious, but the patient is
now in ^dangerous state, and shows symp
toms of^nsauity. We believe he will be
brought in from the country and placed in the
Hospital.'
Now, Sir, without exactly questioning the
accuracy of your statement, as I know not
whence yoa have your information, I would
wish to make a few remarks upon that part
which says that it was not thought dangerous
at first.
In crossing that part of the country
exicily a week after the accident I called at
a hut for a glass of water, when the poor
woman who served me began to cry and
detail to me an accident that had happened to
her husband. She told me that at first he
was thought to have been killed ; that he had
continued in a dangerous state since ; that
they had had no medical advice, as Mr. Hewitt
bad not sent fora doctor; aud that she was
unable to get any herself as they were newly
arrived emigrants, and neither knew nor
were known in the district. The only res
torative used she &aid was bathing his head iu
vinegar, and when I saw him he was quite
Droatrate and insensible.
yv mie mere, Mr. newitt came in, ana sne
renewed her entreaties for a doctor, and he
excused himself; and I left the house under a
very painful impression that the poor man's
life and bis family's subsistence were sacri
ficed to inhumanity.
So much was I impressed with this feeling,
that, immediately on reaching home, I wrote
to Dr. Duncan, the Emigration Agent, stating
these facts, and hoping for the sake of hu
manity he could render some assistance. I
have not received any reply, hut trust that it
has not required my endeavours to lead to the
humane step of bringing him to the Hospital.
As I have uo Ather cause to serve but that of
humanity, I subscribe my name.
I am. Sir, &c,
G. BRA.NDIS.
