University
Cautious
On Hostel
The University senate at a
meeting on Monday night ex
pressed sympathy with the ap
peal for funds for an interna
tional hostel.
It stated, however, that it was
not prepared to set aside uni
versity land for such a hostel
without further information.
A special committee of the
senate had recommended that a
site be allotted, and that the
appeal be giveri the senate's
commendation. .
The committee reported that
the possibility of purchasing a
large house, as had been sug
gested by Dr. J. P. Ainslie, was
being investigated by another
cormmittee.
The president of the Guild of
Undergraduates (Mr.. R. J.
Hawke) in a report. told the
senate's committee that a
building to accommodate 100
students could be erected for
about £150,000.
It was realised that financial
support from this State would
be limited.
The bulk of the money re
quired would come from pri
vate individuals and Govern
ments in countries from which
overseas students for the Uni
versity were now coming.
He said that a business man
who had just gone to Malaya
was confident that at least half
the money (£75,000) would be
donated there immediately.
