US. Plans To
Raise Output
Of Sulphur
United States producers of sul
phur are making plans to in
crease their output in line with
an enlarged production rate
sought by the Defence.. Produc
tion Administration, which has
set a new target of 8,400,000
long tons a year by 1955 and is
offering fast tax a;ortisation
benefits as encouragement. Pre
sent expansion programmes
would increase annual produc
tion to 7,150,000 long tons by
1955. Thus, the new goal calls
for an additional increase in an
nual production of 1,250,000
long tons.
Even though the new U.S. pro
duction goal is.achieved by 1955,
the world supply of. sulphur is
not expected to meet the de
mand. Consequently, prospect
ing for new sulphur deposits
will be pressed. However, an
increase in the nation's annual
output to 8,400,000 long tons
will, it" is expected, prevent the
worsening of the world shortage
and the possible crippling of
production of many items-
steel, fertiliser, rubber, fab
rics, paper and the like---ade
with sulphur or sulphuric acid.
