8,000 Federal Servants
Involved In Sackings
CANBERRA, Mon.-About 8,000 Commonwealth
employees have already been dismissed, been given
notice or have left unfilled jobs under the
Commonwealth Government's "halt-inflation"
retrenchment scheme.
The final target for the re
trenchment is 10,000 of the
total employment of about
160.000 under the Common
wealth Public Service Board.
Most of the sackings have been
among temporary employees.
The Prime Minister (Mr. Men
zies) will make a statement to
the House of Representatives
tomorrow afternoon, giving de
tails of the retrenchment pro
gress.
He is expected to outline how
individual departments and ser
vices have been affected by the
scheme.
Nearly half the notices given
have been in the Postmaster
General's Department, where
the target is understood to be
about 4,000 or 6 per cent of
its total staff.
The effect of the retrenchment
plan is apparent in some of the
departmental estimates present
ed by the Treasurer (Sir Arthur
Fadden) with the Budget.
In some cases where there is
a big labour factor, these have
been severely reduced.
