TITLE
National Champion
Beaten

Valma Payne, national high-
board champion, was beaten by 6
for the State title at the Olympic
Pool yesterday morning. Denise
Haslam. winner of the title, who
last week also won the women's
three-metre springboard, won the
contest with her final voluntary
dive, a flying one and a half-for
ward, for which she scored high
est points in the contest (10.5).

Tanner metatns Mile Title
The one-mile championship of South
Australia was contested at Port Ade
laide yesterday under adverse condi
tions. It was the coldest weather ever,
experienced for this race, only three
competitor! completing the course. M.
Tanner (Rosewater) retained the title
sj one foot D. Openshaw (Rosewater) ;
led the field for the first nalf-nule,
when J. Terrett (Crystal Pool) took over
and held the lead until 10 yards from
the finish, when Tanner overhauled him.
Two back-stroke swimmers. B. Weber
(Rosewater I and R. Crago (Crystal Pool)
were first home ln the half-mile handi
