LAWN TENNIS.
On Saturday afternoon the annual tourna
ment of the 5. A. Lawn Tennis Association
was begun on the asphalt courts at the Ade
laide Oval. The afternoon's sun wa3 some
what warm for playing tennis, but not too hot
to prevent a large number of spectators,
chiefly ladies, from coming to sto the various
matches pltyed off. The arrangements were
as far as possible perfect, but the courts
would be considerably improved by the re
moval of two or three trees, which, besides
being much in the way of players, oa^t thuir
shadowB on the courts, and so render the light
very uncertain. The following matches were
played off : —
Ladies' Double Championship — Miss W.
Brown and Mis-N. Hooart v. Miss M. J. and
E. M. Parr. The two sisters played well and
won- 0—0, 0—1. Miss Brown also played
well, but her partner was too nervous to do
herself justice.
The tirat match in connection with the
Single Championship of South Australia was
played by L. Kaines and Dr. D. T. Harbison.
The latter won fairly easily— G— 0, (J— 3.
G— 3. As the match was for the best out of
five advantage sets it was unnecessary to play
more than the three sets. Harbison comes to
the colony with a good reputation amongst
Victorian tennis players, and, judging from
his' play on Saturday, he quite i«amo n\- to
expectations. His volleying and placing are
extremely good. Kainns has played better,
but, making allowance for that, ho could
hardly hope to defeat to formidable an oppo
nent. Harbison has now to play the winner
out of Bowen and B. Hone, and tho winner
of the final ects meets J. it. Baker, the proaen;
holder of the single championship.
Two matches in tho Single H&ndioap event
wore played off. Lang (15) beat Hambidge
['i 15), 2—6, 7—5, 7—5. Tho game was a very
close one, and both players kaup a good length
on the ball. J. Worrall (15.2) beat 'W. Angel
(To), G— 3, (i— 4. The winner deserved his
victory, although Angel did not play up to
form.
Double Handicap Event (beat of three ad
vantage sets) -Ayeis and CampbbU (15.3)
