Vic. A.L.P.I
Changes
Expected
MET .BOURNE, April 10.
A move is expected to
be made at the Victorian
Labor Conference , in
June to exclude all noli
ticiaiis from the central
executive of the ALP. !
Another proposal is that
an 'all union' team should
be elected to the executive.
These moves are said to
be the culmination of grow
ing bitterness of the trade
union movement against
what it regards as 'the aloof
and dictatorial attitude of
the Labor Party.' . ?
Neither the secretary of
the Melbourne Trades Hall
Council (Mr. J. V. 'Stout)
nor his assistant (Mr. M.
C. Jordan) will seek re
election to the ALP exe
cutive.
Mr. Stout will also with
draw as delegate to the State
ALP conference from the
Shop Assistants' Union.
Both Mr. Stout and Mr.
Jordan resigned from the
ALP executive on the issue
of Labor's support for the
McDonald Country Party
Government in Victoria, but
were later re-elected.
'Kept Apart'
Mr. Jordan said tonight
that the industrial move
ment could be stronger if
kept apart from the political
wing and left free to make
its own decisions.
The president of the
Trades Hall Council (Mr.
O. McKelsqn) said that
Labor politicians were
responsible for the rift.
There must be a re
awakening of interest in the
industrial movement among
Labor politicians, he said.
At present, they appeared
in strength at the meetings
only about the time of pre
selection ballots.
The Federal president of
the Australian workers'
Union (Mr. H. O. Davis) said
he believed there Should be
no politicians on the ALP
executive, but that the
executive should 'be repre
sentative of the industrial
wing.- ALP branches and
rural interests.
