Higher Margins
Conceded
CANBERRA, April 21.
Employers today con
ceded increased margins
to members of the de
registered Buildins Workers'
Industrial Union and thus
settled a dispute which had
threatened to hold up major
Government works in Can
berra.
The Conciliation Commis
sioner for the ACT (Mr. G.
A. Findlay) told a compul
sory conference that he re
gretted the employers' with
clrawal after charges had
been made that the BWIU
was engaging in blackmailing
tactics, but apparently the
employers had acted realisti
cally.
The dispute arose when
Kennedy and Bird Ltd. re
fused to pay BWIU members
a 15/ marginal increase on
the ground that the union
had been deregistered.
BWIU members were then
withdrawn from Kennedy
and Bird jobs.
Mr. Findlay was told that
Kennedy and Bird had been
forced to concede the BWIU
demands.
Private employers had
been placed in an invidious
position by the Common
wealth Public Service Board
granting the increases to
BWIU members directly em
ployed though they were not
legally entitled to them.
