COMMERCIAL SUMMARY FOR
EUROPE.
Register Ofhce, Tuesday, May 10.
PRODUCE MARKET. .
The fortnight las passed quietly. In- tlio wliea
and Hour market a slightly improved tone has bo-jn
observed iu wheat, but there » nothing. of a sansa
tinn.il nr stM-milat.iv« rlin.rnRt.nr tn rnvpal. Unvinc
to supply pressing wants lias beeu the order of the
day. Some fair-sized {parcels fair average sample
wheat have been placed at is. 3d. per-biishol, and
holders manifest some linnness at this rate,
although buyers are not eager to ousrate thereat.
Smaller lots are worth 4s. 2d. per bushel at Port
Adelaide gtoss weight, bags included,, whilo
quotation for farmers' lots at outports is 4s. lOd.
net weight, only a very moderate business being
done. Shipment is almost at a standstill, and
intercolonial trade languishes. Bain is badly
wanted in many country districts to facilitate
seeding operations. Flour supply still keeps ahead
of demand, which is not brisK, and mainly regu
lated by tlio home consumption .requirements.
Leading brands patent roller have not altered in
price since we last wrote, but steady sale has
existed at £9 15s. to £10 per ton, while ordinary
roller is selling at £9 to £9 5s., and superfine stone

lately brisk trade, and piicu is a tritle firmer, clos

IMPORT MARKE'i'.
The seasonable (though insufficient) rainfall that
has been experienced during the fortnight passed
since we last wrote, has Had to some extent a
quickening infiuenco upon markets, and although
the volume of business put tlnougli has not been
gieat, there has been better enquiry and a brisker
feeling. A.good downpour, extending from coast to
Broken Hill, would do a great deal towards a
revival in all classes general business. Navigation
on the Darling River is not yet open otherwise
large parcels goods would have found their way into
tlw interior by this route. Demand throughout the
colony has been well maintained although purchases
have been small, while export to tlie eastern colo
nies has beeu fairly good. Our trade with the
Barrier is very quiet and must so continue
until rain falls or a permanent and ade
quate water supply for the mines is assured.
In sugar a steady regular business has been done,
aud prices well maintained. Stocks, however, aro
not; such as to warrant.heavy purchasing or specula
tion to any great extent. The Elizabeth, now
aw route from Mauritius, will bring last cargo of the
ssason, and as the island markets close h'rmand
stocks are reduced to a minimum good rates should
ucciue to importers. The Queensland season is
over, and holdings here are trilling. All facts favour l
the belief that better rates should obtain. Mauritius
whites for maiivjacturing and domestic purposes
fetch from £22 15s. to £23 10s. China whites and .
American granulated have scarcely been noticed,
but the Refining Company report their usual output
(appioximate to 1C0 tons weekl\)as fairly sustained.
Tablets (Sayes) are woith £«i to £27 por 'ton.
American glucose, covering 'JO to 40 tons, l:;\a been
placed at £21 to £21 10s., Buffalo brand; UW
Crown being worth £25 to £'i0 nominal.
Tlie tea market has given forth unmistakable signs
of improvement, particularly in low a$d medium
mma anu iisuiaii leas, iruuuciug uiiri&c-is ;uu
stiorge^, and the deficiency in supplies and concen
tration of holdings here 'and in Melbourne have
established an advance of lid. to 2d~. per Ib. on
theto characters, which will doubtless be main
taincd, and probably increased. During the past
teu days 1,200 to 1,500 packages Have busn sold
privately at from 7d. tolOd. per 2b. Demand still
exists, but holders are in tlio niind to demand
u.ore money in view of market-eonditions. liigher
class teas are woll stocked, and we are without
information of movement. Coffee supply ia fair,
ai:dlhe inclination is rather against parcel purchas
ing. Uuiiness to the extent of 5 or (i tons lias been
put through in Ceylon plantation ship assortments
on the basis of Is o:;d. to \i. 4d. per Ib. CostaRica
is steady atls.3Jd., but no special business is named.
Cocoas are all in very gso-.l demand, osyscially Fry's
Concentrated and ordinary, ol which, *some 7 to 8
tons have be^n placed during tho fortnight at 13.
2Jd. per Ib. Taylor's realizes Is. 2Jd., and Van
liouten's 3s. 4la. psr Ib. Laine's chicory, SM. ; only
small business ior export to other colonies.
In imported candles nothing very special
has betn dene, fcales for the fortnight aggre
gate 1,600 boxes, chiefly Schiedam's, at od.
in bond, or 7J0. d.p Market is only inode
lately itoeked, but tho colonial article relieves
ail *pressure- altliou-ih quality is not recog
nised us equal to the standard English brands.
In .dried fruits we report one or two fair parcels
cunants sold, value 4d. to 4'd. per Ib. Elotue
raitius, however, are plentiful, aud demand does
not exceed the ordinary requirements of consump
tion; value 4jd. Sultanas aro worth 5i-l; no
'notable business mentioned. Musealols, lljd. to
Is. Id. per Ib., according to sample. Dates are
quoted at 4'|d.; steady sale; prunes, 9d. to Is. Id.;
tiried apricots in boxes vCalifornian), lid.; Uar
celona nuts, 5Jd. ; figs, 7s. per dozen boxes. Tinned
fish likewise have had generally but tho usual retail
orders. As an exception we may quote sale of 100
cases (Trefavenne) quarter sardines at a price not
named, aggregate sale of halves, SO cases various
biai'ds at 5s. 8d. to 6s. !)d. per dozen. Salmon
covering 100 cases has sold (brands various) at 6s. 6d.
to Cs. 9d. per dozen, but lower oiler for large Iot3
would piobably have favourable consideration.
Lob.iters, 12s. 3d. to 13s. per dozen; oysters, as. yd.
to (is., according to brauu; Finnou haddocks, 8s.
Cd. ; kippered herrings, 7s. 9d. ; fresh herrings, 5s.
4d. to 5?. 7£d.; red herrings, in tins
of two dozen, is. 7d.; salt herrings (half,
ban el*), ICs. each; ling fish, 45s. per case.
'Ihe oilmen stores trade has not been of great
moment, although steady enquiry and sales of
small lines goes ou. Worth of mention are sales of
Scandinavian and Anglo-Swiss milk representing
several hundreds of casss at agents' rates. Gamble's
vinegar in case and bulk and Champion's in case,
Lea it Perrin's sauce, Keen's mustard in 1-lb. and
A-lb. tins, Rickutfs blue and starch, Column's
mustard, D.S.F., also starch; salad and castor oils
in pint, half-pint, and quarter-pint, Robinson's
groats, and various lines of pickles— but there is no
cccasien to particularize. The market in chemicals
is steady, but there is no special interest attaching
to tho operations as a general rule. A. parcil
caustic soda has been sold at a price not name 1,
but market is firm owing to advance at home, aud
enquiries are still noticed. Carbonate soda is
worth £10 10s. per ton; whiting, £2 16s.;
scda crystals, £S ts. ; line Liverpool salt, .£4 to
£5; sulphur (roll), £9; flowers of sulphur,
£12; saltpetre, £27. Sulphate of copper has
sold in moderate trade parcels at £17 5s.;
tart uric acid, is. 3jd. per Ib.; cream of tartar, Is.
ajd.; with a fair average trade, but- nothing of
special moment. Pepper, spices, and Eastern pro
duce gcneially area shade lower owing to recent
arrivals, but the demand has not been of a special
nature. Prices following may be taken as a lair
market guide. Rangoon rice, 214 15s. per ton;
Japan polished, £17; So. 2 oatmeal, in sacks, £12;

pimento, CJd. per jb. English malt, in moderate
trade lots, is fetching 11s. 3d. per bushel, lions
are quiet, and uotliim: mentioned for tho week.
Tasmanian, new, is. lOd. to 2s.; Rents, 2s. to 2s.
id. per lb.,d.p. Tlie usual demand for seeds is
noticed. Carraway, 5|d. per Ib. ; canary, 13s.
per cwt.; linseed, 15s.; and hemp ISs. Knglish
hams fetch Is. 2d. per Ib., fair sale. Peel and
confections unchanged, with no special business.
Iu matches and vestas no very important business
has been done. Several 10-case lots small safetys
and taniUtiekors have changed bands, but no par
ticulars are made public. The former fetch Is. 7d.
to Is. 10d., and the latter 2s. 3d. to 2s. 5d. per gross;
SfO vestas, 15s. 3d. ; plaid, 4s. 4*d. The sale record
of bulk oils is scanty, market being heavily stocked
and demand only moderate. Supplies of' kerosine
have been augmented, during current week to tlio
extent of 14, UUO cases, a fair portion of which was
placed prior to arrival. The sales named are 2,000
cases Evening Star (150° test) on spot at a price
withheld, and trade lines Crystal Waterwhite afc
full figure value, lid. to 11JU. pergallon. small
lines castor (200 in all) in half-cases have been
placed : value, 2s. Sd. per gallon ; also 50 drums
boiled and raw linseed, market rate, 2s. 8d. to 2s.
Od. Colza we quote at 33. 6d. ; turps, 3s. psr gallon.
Cement marked very dull indeed, and nominal
quotations in absence of busines is 9s. Cd. to 9s. 9J.
per cask. The into market is comparatively quiet,
yet maintains firmness, although the sales are o
little importance. Cornsacks are worth 5s 7d to
5?, 6d. CranbaBs (of which 30 bales are reported
sold) command 4s. 4d. to 4s. Oil. per dozen. Nearly

one sale worthy of mention in a commercial report
has been made public. Small sorting lines of all
sorts galvanized iron have changed hands, bub no
parcel. Value of parcels, therefore, we refrain from
quoting, although we understand slight concession
op. last values would be entertained, pig iron,
loop, bar. and rod iron all neglected. Sheet- zinc in
tnwie lota sells at £31 to m 10s.; sheet zincj £21.
In black pipe we report sale of 10,000 ft. I and f in.
on private terms. Wire in 5 and 10 ton lota has

and brands diversified wo refrain from quoting
value. Wire - nettine very dull of sale. 600
boxes tinplates, comprising IC charcoal, IK do.,
IC coke, have sold on private term»/ The
timber market is almost glutted, and merchants
supply themselves with lengths and sizfts as they
require rathet than stock. Importers are willing
to receive orders. The only arrival for the week is
he Vision, irom Kaipara, with 136,000 ft. sawn
kauri. In the liquid trade an apparent falling off
is noticed for the week; but we aro of opinion that
it is only apparent — distributors will not stock
heavily, importers must sell, consequently if a
buyer will not take 100 cases he must be supplied
with 25, hence it comes that although aggregate
sales for week or month may be maintained the
parcel sales aro absent. ' Brandy, both iu case arid
nilk, lias seen moderately brisk trade, lleitnessy's
bulk in qr.-casks has beeu placed; as also Mirteil's
