PENGUINS AT
FREMANTLE
Possible Carriers Of
A Virus Disease
Twenty-two Macaroni pen
guins which arrived at Fre
mantle last Wednesday aboard
H.M.A.S. Labuan from Heard
Island are possible carriers of
Newcastle Disease and Fowl
Pest-a virus disease which
is rampant throughout the
world, except Australia and
New Zealand. The Acting
Chief Commonwealth • Quaran
tine Officer in W.A. (Mr. E.
F. Twaddle) said yesterday
that wildfowl off the British
Isles were carriers of . the
disease.
It was possible, said Mr.
Twaddle, that birds released by
research parties in the Antarctic
for experimental purposes were
also carriers. He said that the
Commonwealth quarantine regu
lations laid down that no bird
could be imported from any other
country except New Zealand,
Even birds from New Zealand
had to be properly certificated
before they could enter the Com
monwealth.
Mr. Twaddle did not view fav
ourably a suggestion that the
penguins could be taken outside
the three-mile limit and released.
