DIAMOND WATCH STILL AT
BOTTOM OF HARBOUR
The £600 diamond-studded wrist watch lost by a Dutch migrant.
Mrs. Jean ToL on Saturday was believed to be still at the bottom
of the Fremantle harbour last night.
Mr. F. Ball, the diver, is waiting
for the berth at E shed, Victoria
Quay, where the watch was drop
ped, to be clear of shipping and
for specific instructions as to the
exact position where it was lost
before he will dive in search of it.
The watch was lost when it
slipped from Mrs. Tol's wrist
while the French ship Sontay was
berthing on Saturday. Mr. Ball
said last night that he was told
by Mrs. Tol before she left by air
for Melbourne on Sunday that in
structionk regarding the exact posi
tion where the watch was drop
ped would be given to him by the
ship's agent at Fremantle. How
ever the agent said last night that
he had received no word from
Mrs. Tol about the watch.
The depth of the water near
where the watch was dropped is
about 38ft., with a muddy bottom.
This mud will have been churned
up by the coming and going of
ships since Saturday. The watch
was not insured.
Mr. Ball said that to have any
chance of finding the watch it
would be necessary for the berth
to be vacant, and preferably for
the sun to be.shining so that visi
bility would be better at the bot
tom of the harbour.
