EXECUTIVE'S
DEATH
NEW YORK, Jan. 25: A
first-degree. murder charge
against Ralph Edward Barrows,
has been dropped. He is
a handsome 20-year-old youth
who is on trial for having
killed a Canadian textile exe
cutive at the Waldorf Astoria
Hotel in November. 1948. The
jury can now acquit Barrows
or find him guilty of man
slaughter in the first or second
degree.
Judge Saul Streit granted a
defence motion that the murder
charge be dropped on the
ground that the prosecution
had failed to prove murder in
the first degree of the victim,
Colin Cameron McKellar (56).
The prosecution had tried to
prove that Barrows beat Mc
Kellar and robbed him. The
defence contended that Bar
rows was defending himself
against an improper advance.
