Artillery Active on Fifth Army Front
LONDON, Monday.-Guns rumbled all along the Fifth Army
front yesterday. From the :Cassino battlefront right down to
the sea Allied artillery took up the challenge of the Nazi long
range guns, and the big guns pounded' away at intervals, New
-Zealanders have been in action again on the Cassino front.

umn was caught on a road: and
th.e surviving vehicles retired
behind a smoke-screen.
New Zealanders inflicted heavy
casualties on the enemy when they
attacked two strongpoints. Artil
lery "Sbftened up" the positions,
and theni the New Zealanders went
in. There were many artillery ex
changes on the Cassino front.
Five German sorties on the Ancio
beachhead were beaten off, and a
remote-controlled tank knocked out
by rifle-fire. Apart from this activity
it was a quiet day on the front.
The Garigliano River has dropped
five feet during the past few days.
It is believed that this has been
caused by the Germans operating a
clam above the British positions, but
the object of the damming cannot
be ascertained yet.
