AS their voluntary war effort
retired Sea-Captains J. New-
man and R. T. Heather are con-
ducting a Merchant Service School
of Seamanship at Power House.
Melbourne. The school, which is
free, is open to any youth or man
rejected for one of the services be-
cause of some minor disability.
Classes are held in all branches
of seamanship. Successful students
will be eligible for war work on
ships.

CONVENER and president of
the newly - formed Malayan
Women's Association, Sydney, is
Mrs. (Lieut.-Colonel) H. A. Lord,
who was stationed with her hus-
band in Malaya while the latter
was head of the Salvation Army
there. Object of the association is
to aid former residents of Malaya
who have come to Australia.
With her husband. Mrs. Lord
was for 26 years in Korea before
being stationed in Malaya.

NEW job for Wing-Commander
L. J. Wackett is his appoint-
ment as chief technical adviser to
the Aircraft Production Co-ordin-
ating Committee headed by Mr.
Essington Lewis.
Wing-Commander Wackett, who
pioneered aircraft engineering and
design in Australia, has recently
been engaged on special experimental
work for the R.A.A.F. His
advanced training plane is in mass
production.
