SMART TENNIS CARDIGAN...
. If tennis is your special forte, you will
find this simple-to-knit woolly takes a lot
of beating, lt is made of blanket wool
and designed on tailored lines that do very
flattering things for the figure.
HERE at last is the
sports cardigan
which will actually
enhance your immaculate
shorts and shirt. The stitch
is effective, yet very easy
to do, and knitted in blanket
wool it takes practically no
time to make.
Materials: 14oz. of blanket wool
in white, 1 pair of No. 3 and also
No. 6 knitting needles, and 4 ball
buttons.
Measurements: Length from shoul-
der at armhole edge, 19½ins.; width
all round underarms, when fastened,
34ins., stretching to fit a 34 to 36in.
bust measurement; length of sleeve
seam, including cuff, 19½ins.
Tension: 4 sts. to 1in. in width and
9 rows to 2ins. in depth.
Abbreviations: K, knit; p, purl;
sts., stitches; rep., repeat; dec., de-
crease or decreasing; inc., increase
or increasing; ins., inches; patt.,
pattern; beg., beginning.
Always work into back of all cast
on sts. to produce firm edges.
BACK
Begin at lower edge. Cast on 60
sts., using No. 6 needles, and work
4iins. in k 1, p 1 rib, but inc 1 st.
at end ol last row (61). Change to
No. 1 needles and following patt.:
1st Row: P 1, . Do not knit the
next st., k following one, draw this
over previous one, then k first st.,
k 1, p 1; rep. from . to end.
2nd Row: Kl,* Do not knit the
next st., p following one, draw this
over the previous one, then p pre-
vious one, p 1, k 1; rep. from * to
end.
These 2 rows form patt, but at
same time inc. 1 st. at both ends of
7th row, then at both ends of every
6th row following until there are 69
sts. Continue without inc. until
work measures I3ins. from beg., fin-
ishing after a 2nd row.
Armhole Shaping: Dec. 1 st, at
both ends of next 8 rows, leaving 53
sts. Now work without dec. until
armholes measure 6ins. on straight,
finishing after a 2nd row.
Neck and Shoulder Shaping: 1st
Row: Patt, until 6 remain, turn.
2nd Row: Patt until 6 remain,
turn.
3rd Row: Patt, until 12 remain,
turn.
4th Row: Patt until 12 remain,
turn.
5th Row: Patt. 6, cast off 17,
patt, to end of row.
Cast off.

A CLOSE-UP of this unusual
new stitch, which you will find
very easy to do. When finished
it forms a wide and attractive
rib pattern.
Join wool at other side of neck
edge and work to end of row.
Cast off.
RIGHT FRONT
Begin at lower edge. Cast on 38
sts. using No. 6 needles and work
4iins. in k 1, p 1 rib. Change to
No. 1 needles and patt, as follows:
1st Row: K 6, rep. 1st patt, row
from * to end.
2nd Row: Repeat 2nd patt, row
until 6 remain, k 6. Repeat these
2 rows, but inc. 1 st. at side edge
on 7th row, then on every 6th row
following until 4 inc. in all have been
made, then continue without inc.
ALTHOUGH it was designed for tennis, this youthful cardigan
looks so chic that you will want to team it with a bright skirt
and blouse for spectator sports, or an afternoon at home.

ARMHOLE SHAPING
Dec. 1 st. at beg. of next row,
then at this same edge on next ll
rows, leaving 30 sts. Continue with-
out dec. until armhole is lin. longer
than back, finishing at front edge.
SHOULDER SHAPING
1st Row: Patt, until 6 remain,
turn, patt. back.
3rd Row: Patt, until 12 remain,
turn, patt. back.
5th Row: Patt, until 18 remain,
turn, patt. back.
7th Row: Patt, over all sts. Cast
off the 24 shoulder sts., k every 2nd
and 3rd sts. together, then continue
in garter-st. on remaining 6 sts.
for 2iins. Cast off.
LEFT FRONT
Work this to match right front,
but with all shapings at opposite
edges.
SLEEVES
Begin at lower edge of cuff. Cast
on 34 sts. using No, 6 needles and
work 3iins. in k 1, p 1 rib, but dec.
1 st. at end of last row (33). Change
to No. 1 needles and patt., but inc.
1 st. at both ends of 7th row, then
at both ends of every 6th row fol-
lowing until there are 41 sts. Work
3 rows after last inc. row. then inc.
1 st. at both ends of next row and
every 4th row following, until there
are 57 sts. Continue without inc.
until sleeve measures 191ns. from
beg., or length desired. Now shape
top by dec. 1 st. at both ends of
every row until 17 sts. remain.
Cast off.
MAKING-VP
, Join shoulders, then sew in sleeves
and press seams. Join garter-st
border at back, then sew down tc
back neck. Press. Sew up side
and sleeve seams and press them
Make 4 crocheted buttonhole loops
on right front ribbing, then sew
4 buttons on left to correspond.
