CHINA CONFLICT.
ENEMY TROOPS MASSING.
Five Provinces Affected.
NEW YORK, Nov. S.-The Asso
ldated Press correspondent at
Chungking reports that a Chinese
army spokesman said that the Jap
anese were apparently massing troops
In the 5 Chinese provinces of
Hupeh, Honan, Shansi, Suiyan and
Shantung. Fifty thousand troops
were concentrated at Hankow and
upwards of 10,000 Inthe Talmoun
tains in Shantung.
The spokesman added that it was
difficult to predict the enemy's ob
jectives but it was possible that the
Japanese hoped to close the gap in
the Peking-Hankow railway, 60 per
cent of which is now in Japanese
hands. The Japanese might also try
to consolidate their positions, par
ticularly In North China. It was
noted that the most recent Japanese
drives were apparently launched for
the purpose of removing potential
bases for a Chinese counter-attack.
