Escaped from Lock-up.-Frederick
Harold Castle (44), miner, admitted a
charge that on July 30 be escaped from
legal custody. In evidence it was stated
that accused was arrested on a drunken
ness charge on the evening of July 29
and while having his breakfast at the
North Fremantle lock-up the next morn
ing, he escaped. For this offence. Castle
was sentenced to 1 month's Imprison
ment. He received 7 days' imprisonment
and 3 days' imprisonment, to be served
concurrently with his 1 month's sen
tence, on charges that he resisted Con
stable Taylor in the execution of his
duty and that he gave a false name to
Constable Taylor when questioned in
Palmyra 3 hours after his escape from
the North Fremantle lock-up. Sgt Cop
pinger prosecuted.

Illegal Wharf Permit.-For offences
against the National Security Act in that
on April 26 he had in his possession
an official wharf permit issued for the
use of another person and that he en
tered an enclosed wharf without the
authority of a written permit, contrary
to the National Security (General) Re
gulations. James Bradshaw (about 34).
truck driver, of Stirling-street. Perth.
was fined a total of £10 with £3/18/6
costs. Mr N. Good prcsecuted for the
Defence Department.

Evil Fame Charge Dismissed.--John
Patrick McCartney (38). labourer. of
Collie-street. Fremantle. denied a charge
that at Fremantle on July 16 and divers
dates he associated with thieves and per
sons of evil reputation and was there
fore a person of evil fame. In disminsr
ing the case the Magistrate warned the
accused that if he appeared In Court
again on a similar charge he would be
convicted. Det-Sgt Cannon prosecuted.

Seamen Absent Without Leave.-"You
men must realise that there is a war
on and therefore you must make the
best of your conditions." said the Magis
trate after hearing the evidence of 3
seamen. Harald Anskar Kaspersen (33.
Paul Louritz (32) and Bjarne Hansen
(24). who were charged with having
been absent without leave from their
ship for 2 days. The men complained
that the food on the ship was poor and
that conditions were unfavourable. The
Magistrate ordered that the men be
sent to gaol for 14 days and that if in
the meantime they were willing to return
to their ship, the captain might take
'hem back immediately. "We'll go on
a hunger strike." said one of the sea
men as he left the court.

Italian truck driver, was fined a total of
£7110/ with £2/8/ costs for having. as
an enemy allmn, driven a motor truck
without a permit to drive and having had
another truck on his property without a
permit. Mr L. B. Goold. who prosecuted
.or the Commonwealth Government.. said
